Actually Termite's correct. The terms have been used interchangeably since the media got hold of them. But technically, you could get into someones server through a back door and not do any damage and consider it hacking. If you cracked security for malicious destruction, that would be considered technically cracking.

From the Hacker's Dictionary:

Hacker: 7. One who enjoys the intellectual challenge of creatively overcoming or circumventing limitations. 8. [deprecated] A malicious meddler who tries to discover sensitive information by poking around.

Sorry. I guess my perspective is one of security enforcement - I work for the feds and we still call malicious attempts to circumvent our security as "hacking". We call characters who direct their attacks at pwd security "crackers."

It's a scourge and one of the reasons the computer illiterate are afraid of their computers. It's killing the web, that and spam, and I'm afraid that sooner or later there's going to be negative ramifications. The academic community is already talking about a second "web" one that will be somewhat private. Which degrades the beauty of what the web is all about for many of us. I hate to see enforcement or an alternative "safe" web reduce the freedom of the free flow of creative expression but it's going to happen unless we do something about it. Don't know what...

Oh, I'm a relatively new poster. How do I change "Registered User" under my name to something less prosaic? It's not clear to me in the edit profile section.

And by the way, I just ate a Marie Callender's Cheesy Chicken Breast & Rice TV dinner. By God it was good. Wish I had another.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, and thank you. Glad to see that I'm not the lone wolf on ABX trying to correct what a hacker is. I hate crackers and I'm proud to be a hacker. Oh, BTW, did I mention thank you? If not, thank you.

Don't want you giving us "hackers" a bad name.

Um.....You're welcome!

For what its worth....I don't remember specifically, but I think YOU might be the one who set me straight once upon a time! So, if so, THANK YOU!

It's kind of like my other "bandwagon"...the difference between a "progammer" and a "software engineer". We'll save that discussion for another thread.

Maybe it was me. There are still a lot of tech books that hit on this subject of what a hacker is. Too bad the media messed it up for us.

Programmer, software engineer. Yikes. I think there should be another category, porngrammer-they seem to be the best in creating hijacks. I don't know what I'm anymore. DBA, software design analysis, programming, networking design, hardware analysis, etc-geez, it's easier just to call me a hacker that gets very little sleep.
