I just had a CDW sales person tell me that Dell computers are just Acer computers in disguise. Is that true?

Simple answer is no:

Desktops are custom built by Dell, but they do not manufacture any parts, just order the parts and slap them together.

Notebooks are different, but only slightly. They are designed by Dell and then often built by other companies for a basic unconfigured model. Then Dell will custom configure each laptop based on the customers needs.

But, I can tell you one thing, Dell is the largest computer manufacturer in the world. They are not dependent on any one outsourcing company, and while they may have used Acer (or currently do) for some of their notebooks, it is absolutely safe to say that not all Dell's are Acer's in disguise.

Sounds more likely to me that the CDW guy was trying to get you to purhcase one of their systems (since they don't carry Dell) and bash the competition. Dell makes fine machines.

I build Dell computers.

Whatever the case, if you require "Award Winning Service and Support", buy a big box laptop.

If you are hardware savvy, you can get an identical chassis in most cases and build your own.

But...as anyone can tell you who has made a little mistake when assembling hardware in a DIY situation, you are often on your own.

I looked into building a few laptops in different configurations, but right now Dell is running 35% off of 9300 Inspirons. I configured a 17" WS WUXGA, 1.73 P-Mobile, 1 Gig of RAM, a 256MB Nvidia 6800 (DDR1 - non-ultra) 60 gig HD, built in Wireless and an 8x DVD-ROM drive for $1480 with free shipping. That is around $760 off of what I would have paid a week ago, so if you pay attention, you can get a great deal on a big box, and get covered by their service.

So, in summary...a Dell is a Dell, no matter what is in the box. You are paying for more than parts in some cases, so you may shave a few bucks with CDW, but you might also shave some service if it breaks.

Lol, there is a lot of misinformation in this thread.

No this is not true per say. We do offer OEM computers. I will check later, but I know that one of our OEM laptops are made by Quanta computers based out of China. I am not sure if all of the OEM laptops are made by quanta, but I will find out.

The majority of our laptops are made by Dell employees. 80-90%. Just the cheap models are of the OEM variety.

Acutally, this is incorrect as well. We use many many suppliers in all of our LCD monitors.

I just checked out some of what we use.

Phillips
LG Electronics
LTN--? Not sure what this one is. I was thinking Lite ON, but I can't find any information about Lite On LCDs.
Foxconn
Acer
Samsung.

I hope many people see this thread so things are cleared up. I would personally like to state that dell is a great company, offers service and computers for the average joe. Building is not for everyone unforteuntly, the lesser fortunate with computers or the newbs, dell offers great solutions. I would think almost all there parts except for the case though are NOT made by them. Some things they even assemble themself and put there name on I would think. Dell uses a lot of DIFFERENT parts though so it is hard to change parts such as the psu because of the properietary connector problem, etc. Overall, I am against anyone that flames dell because they don't like the price. If you want to build, you can build yourself, but your not getting a computer with a warranty, it's just as simple as that. You won't be able to return your computer either, etc. So if any dell haters read this, think next time before you have an insult on them because you pay a premium price for service and no hassles, very reliable computers imho. If you can build, then build, if not, there is always dell.

One other note, Dell does not manufacturer any parts. They just assemble them/design them.

Dell does have their own patents within the realm of assembling PCs/design/heat dissipation/etc.

As Jagwire stated, Dell has literally thousands of suppliers. The PSU is proprietary, but PC power and cooling offers Dell compatible PSUs IIRC.

Even as a system builder myself, I can't compete with Dell prices. There is no way I can assemble a full desktop with monitor for less than 400$, little on imply a warranty.

Yes, I have seen many times there celeron pc's for 400 dollars, which is near astonishing. I have said before and many times that dell is still a great computer manufacter, but I think they used to be better, nowadays you call support which is all outsourced to kids who don't know what there talking about from my experience.

All parts don't seem to be made by dell, and if you open your dell and take a look you'll see many manufacter names, i.e a maxtor hard drive. Those 400 dollar deals cannot be beat no matter how you put it which is another reason why dell shouldn't be hated.

Edit :: I just saw they are offerng a lcd monitor package for 549 canadian, unbelievable if you ask me. They are smart and cut back where they can, i.e the hard drive was only 25 gb if i remember. Great for somone in an office though.
