drill chuck porn, please!

So, I have noticed that the hole in the ceiling where the cable for cable TV is run up to the apartment above mine is drilled flush to the wall. Seeing as how the apartments aren't offset to each other on a center line, and how your average drill chuck is built, I imagine they had to use a special chuck of some kind if the hole is properly vertical in nature.

What is that type of chuck called and does anyone have a picture of one?

I just want to know, being the curious kind. Or do they just drill a hole halfway at an angle from below, then from above and run the cable in a slight curve "inside" the wall? (The wall is glorious 50's concrete, by the way. Radon included!)

There has to be an electrician or cable monkey of a different kind around these here parts that knows this stuff.

It never fails. I Google, find nothing, ask a question, then I find the answer myself. Darnit.

"Offset chuck" makes a whole lot of sense, of course.

Re: drill chuck porn, please!

Some how I doubt your average cable guy has any kind of special chuck. I think you are correct in assuming it was drilled from below and above.

Re: drill chuck porn, please!

Well, I suspect they ran cable in a bunch of old houses here around the same time. Hundreds of apartments. I wouldn't be surprised if the company handling such a big job had equipment to drill a hole flush to the wall in a single go. Lining up holes from both sides isn't easy, I would think.

With the floor being 6-8 inches of reinforced concrete, you need a fairly large drill hammer to get anything done.

Re: drill chuck porn, please!

They also sell extra long drill bits which would keep the drill farther away from the hole allowing the hole to be drilled flush with the wall. The longer the drill bit the straiter the whole will be. If you know what I mean.

Re: drill chuck porn, please!

it's called a flex bit, make em in canadia( where the canadians live)
basically it is a drill bit welded to a smaller diameter rod anywhere
from 12 to 72 inches, thereby letting the operator hold the drill motor
at a different angle from the point of entry, the rod is quite flexible,
a good operator can drill multiple holes that are not necessarily
parallel to each other.

Thumbs up Re: drill chuck porn, please!

They have some low profile 90 degree drill adapters with chucks that can get wihin 1" of a wall for $10 @ harbor freight. What I usually do is I put a big long extension on a bit and it looks like it was drilled straight up. I dunno, there's a MILLION tricks for that.
