DTS! Bums me out when I find that a movie I bought has DD only. Bums me out even more when I find out that a different version of the DVD does have DTS, and I just didn't see it

I have a quick question fellas.

Does DTS make a difference with only 5.1 speakers, or do you have to have at least 6.1 to notice?

Someone help, may need to upgrade .

BTW, I am looking at this:

And this for the Sub.

No it makes no difference, dts just has a better seperation without all the filters dd has Like Chance said. That onkyo looks sweet Also Sup see if it has two opticals one for dts/thx and dd 5.1 you can probably hook it simultaniously two your pc and tv with an external dvd player.

DTS, THX and Dolby Digital is 5.1 channel. DTS ES is 6.1 channel. THX EX and DD EX are 6.1 as well.

DTS is the best sound you can get because it is the least compressed of the digital formats. There are 2 different DTS compression formats as well.

LOL! Yeah, PC speakers are ok. But you need some nice 3-way fronts and at least a 2 or 3-way center and surrounds, all with adequate wattage to fully hear/feel the difference between the two formats. Plus you need it all set up pointing to your "sweet spot" for your living room layout for the full effect. I don't have a sub but I do have some very large floor standing fronts for my home theater system and they vibrate the pictures on the wall and rumble the couch with a good DTS DVD (in an apartment).

To my ears DTS definitely makes a difference with a 5 speaker (and sub?) system that has decent DTS decoding. For those of you with DTS I'm sure you've already tried playing the same segments with DD5.1 and DTS - no comparison I'm sure you'll agree. I just wish DTS would be encoded on more and more releases. I'd gladly sacrifice some of the extras for higher sound quality. Just my 2 cents.

I think your system should sound pretty good. You might not be able to tell too much of a difference with just two way speakers, though.

yea we would have gotten a good set of florr standing speakers, but we had to be able to mount all of our speakers on our walls. Our 65 inch HD tv takes up too much room in our basement.

Ok guys, I sifted through my limited colection of DVDs a couple of nights ago. I finally found a movied with DTS. Xmen 2.

I proceeded to watch the movie in its entirety in DTS. I must say Wow.
I can't beleive I never saw the difference. I did not know that DTS was better, and I have seen the light.

The movie sounded great. The main thing I noticed was there was very little distorsion in the movie cranked way up too loud. I also noticed that the sorround speakers were louder and the souround effects were more pronounced.

My oh my, what have I been missing . Thanks for this thread. It has helped me "see the light"

You haven't been missing much in that there are few DVDs which feature DTS, unfortunately. And many of them are movies which don't really even need it, like love stories or dramas. I think they should master all action/sci-fi/adventure DVDs with DTS! I was hoping the Indiana Jones trilogy was going to be released with DTS but it wasn't. Still sounds good, tho.

Dang it, I just bout the 60th anniversary edition DDay Saving Private Ryan. For some reason it just came encoded with DD. The 1999 release ad DTS. ***?
