| Flipping Jet Show!!! &*^*&) So some idiots in the next town has decided to have a "jet" show at the local airport. I don't know what the heck they are thinking. I am so ticked off right now. These jets are so loud, they wake me up from a dead sleep. The jets started yesterday, and will continue all weekend. I work nights, and obviously sleep during the day. This jet show is happening within 5 miles of the largest subdivision of houses in Tennessee. This is ridiculous. Who can I write a nasty gram to? City Council... ![]()

| You ought to go live on a fighter base if you think that is bad. I can sleep through pretty much any type of noise though. |

| all you can do is complain, but most likely they won't care because airshows mean lots of revenue for the city. as long as they aren't breaking the sound barrier, it is perfectly legal

| The "cone" you see around the aircraft appears when the aircraft is close to or is breaking the sound barrier. The lower the altitude the faster sound travels. You can see the cone in this video. You will hear a boom on the ground when an aircraft breaks the sound barrier. If you are around a weapons range and hear a boom on a clear day, you are hearing the sonic boom. When I was at Edwards AFB for a TDY, I heard a few booms. http://home.pacbell.net/ok3/f-18flyby.mpg Edit - I tried finding some video or audio files of what it sounds like but I can't find anything decent. I found some videos but they sound like crap. IMO, the sound they say is the "boom" sounds more like the engines to me. The engines are always, if not most of the time, quieter from the front. Well, in the videos, the "boom" happens just as the aircraft passes the camera. It sounds more like a "roar" than a boom. If the quality was better, it would be easier to tell. | The problem I have is how populous the area is. You know it would be like me during a loud rock show in 200 in the morning.

| Be thankful you live in a country that has these kind of shows. It is the sound of freedom, whats one little weekend anyway. These things are put on to show the tax payer what they are paying for. ![]()

| Air shows are a key recruiting tool for the US military. That is the main reason they have them. As for the sonic booms, they wont happen. They aren't allowed to do it over 99.9% of the US landmass during. The only places are usually in desrert locations over Nevada and Utah. As for the noise, it is only for 4-6 hours a day, and they only last for 10-20 minutes a time. Have a little patience and try not to be the ugly neighbor. There are probably 40,000 people there who are loving it. Why not venture over yourself and check it out. I just went to the airshow webpage you are talking about and it looks like it will be a great show. There are only the Thunderbirds and an F-15 demo. The rest are all prop planes. Go check it out. I found a still image of a F-18 breaking the sound barrier below. Sort of cool. Also the link below is to the airshow. GO CHECK IT OUT! http://www.smyrnaairport.com/airshow.html ![]() |
