Well,I`m not so pleased by the compliment
Maybe you should check your Greek again.
Here`s an example:you go to Greece for vacations and keep greeting that way...I think your stay there will be permanent!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL!...no kidding!...Years ago my brother and I told a gullible friend that it (malaka) meant "thank you" (efaristo) after he asked us to give him a polite expression to use in a Greek restaraunt we all frequented, having heard us speak to the staff with small Greek phrases that seemed to get us a positive reception and good service.....After he said that we were lucky to get out without getting our asses handed to us, although it WAS funny at the time!

Well, for speaking the truth Greeks use this word frequently, so much that has lost its value. That is when two friends talking about some funny stuff and kidding themselfs but when you express it wrong or in wrong place then it has the same value as always...
Sure it isn`t good for greeting someone LOL

As your story goes that is a practical joke that Cretan Greeks do in tourists But all know when an alien says that cause of gullibleness and so nothing happens except of making nervous and ridiculous the spoken person!!!

Having my curiosity stirred, I looked up what this could mean...the first link here makes it sound like it's all you need to know and is accepted...

http://greece.hispeed.com/greeklessons.htm

The second site shown indicates something altogether different...

http://www.greeceathensaegeaninfo.com/phrases.htm

...so I see much is lost in translation...I'm sure it wasn't mean in a harmful way, but after reading the second link I can understand why some offence could be taken.
