| Hiya Bro Skully! ![]() I'm in an interesting business situation at the moment: I'd like to hear from anyone with advice to offer. There seems to be a "political" battle going on inside a very large clent company of mine. At the same time, I've heard that a competitor of mine has been making negative comments about me to people within the client Co. in question... as far as I can tell, there is no factual basis for this "trash talk". FWIW, on several occasions I've been called in to "clean up' behind this competitors (failed) work, at the very client in question. Further, there has been talk in the field about this competitor dealing unethically (kickbacks to certain people @ one or more clients, in return for approval of unreasonably high billing, 5 to 10 times what one would expect). One possible past beneficiary of this scheme has just been given control of awarding work to me, this competitor, or whoever, on behalf of the client company in question. Here's my quandry. I've always dealt with competitors very simply: never say ANYTHING negative about my competition. "Back in the day", I was trained that my competitions own behavior would sort out problems such as I described above. That policy has generally worked, but I've seen lost business as a result, too. On the other hand, there is a distinct possibility that by failihg to speak up, a client of mine MAY get ripped off by this competitor, I won't make any bones about this: the client in question has been one of my biggest sources of income. Obviously, I have something to gain if I say anything about what I suspect is going on. On the other hand, I stand to lose as much as 15% of my income if I get "shut out" as a result of what's going down. So, what, if anything, should I do? My instinct is to play this as low-key as possible, but the last time I went through this, my (then) employer & I "lost" the client in question for 4+ years... Ironically, that is the very same customer I'm talking about here! What really bothers me is that by keeping quiet, I may be silently aiding my competitor in ripping off ome of my biggest customers. OK, what advice do you people have for me?

| I would probably keep quiet myself. It would probably be difficult to approach the subject with your client, unless you have a relationship with them that transcends business, a solid trust or near-friendship. Speaking up on the matter may have the effect of making you appear to stoop to the behaviour that is attributed to your competitor. At least, this is how I see it based on the small bit that I know.

| Thanks for the quick reply, zsaz! That was my initial reaction, too, but I'm pretty heavily conditioned on this topic. It's been a LONG time since I've had a meaningful discussion about this, and I hope to hear as many viewpoints as possible. FWIW, until I'm convinced otherwise, I'm keeping quiet: I'd rather lose business than roll in the muck with someone I have such a low opinion of... (the competitor, not you zsaz!

| Hey SKI...I can relate to your situation and the quandry it presents you. One thing I have learned is never badmouth the competition. Others may not have those values, but you have to live with yourself and be able to hold your head high for having strong ethics. Even if it means losing short term - you gain in the long run. This sounds like the same company has gone through this before? Do they like being taken advantage of? How would it be received if you gave them some examples of unscrupulous practices and assured them that you don't operate that way? Of course you can't name names, but bringing such practices to light may be the only way to keep them as clients.

| Hey SKI bro, Thats a tough one to answer. If it was me I'd pray for guidance, then follow my God given conscience. If anything I do takes away from the peace of my heart, I find its just not worth it. To live at peace with yourself and your God is great gain. Doing the right thing, the God thing, is always the right thing. ![]()
