Ski...that is a difficult situation.

I think if I were in your shoes, I might tell the client that you think they competitor may be playing some unfair games and be overcharging them. But make sure you follow up with a disclaimer that it is not your policy to trash talk competitors and that you are only interested in saving them (the client) from getting ripped off.

Basically just give them a "heads up" to "examine the situation closely" but don't make it sound like a "they're bad and I'm good" scenario, ya know.

SKI, you mention that you have had to "clean up" after this competitor's failed work on several occasions....how well is this documented? You cannot go into any sort of meeting or discussion without documented proof of your allegations and inferences...if all you have is suspicion and "word of mouth", FORGET IT. Sadly, unless these issues are documented, you will be setting yourself up, not him.
I might have a sit down with the client on the occasion of losing the first bid to this character and state one of two things...either state that you will be unavailable to correct the inevitable mess or that you will be available should corrective work be needed...depending on your state of mind. I would be tempted to refuse further "corrective" work at a client that has repeatedly failed to show me trust in return and move on...I have done so before.

Bottom line, the proof is in the performance ...on the part of all parties. If they are going to continue a spotty record of "performance" towards you, perhaps you should be looking for another client to replace that 15%...unless you enjoy playing "fireman' when they screw up on their poor choice of vendor.

Good luck SKI...business "triage" is never easy....
