Unhappy Gophers - How do you get rid of these vile, evil monsters?

Destruction is getting worst over the past week.

One very old fir tree is at risk of being killed as well as two other trees. If I have to remove the fir tree, considering the size and location on my property I'm looking at thousands of dollars for removal.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of these vile, evil, costly beasts?

Trapping is the next thing on the list. Gasing is not working, nor are the vibration sticks.

Simple, you get yourself a good rodent catching cat, place the cat by the hole you see the gopher go down, then get yourself a 5 gallon bucket of water, pour it down the hole, that gopher will either come out and get caught by the cat, or will drown down in the hole, or possibly go out the back door.

If the cat doesn't stay by the hole when you place the cat there, do it a few times, and the cat will get the message, espicially when you place the cat there and the cat sees you come with a 5 gallon bucket of water, and pour it down the gopher hole.

My Dad did this enough times, when he lived on a farm years ago, and the cat soon figured out, when the cat saw my Dad fill a 5 gallon pail of water, that it was time to bag a gopher, parked itself by the hole.

Trapping works fairly well. There is always poison food. The varments will eat anything. Plug all their holes with steel wool, or a large object they can't easily bypass, then if you have a well and can fill their homes with water, you can drown them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richardson's_Ground_Squirrel

Farmers and ranchers have developed some ingenious ways of exterminating gophers besides trapping, shooting or poisoning. One enterprising person uses a large modified sewage vacuum truck to suck gophers out of dens and into the truck's tank. Another person developed a process that fills the burrows with a mixture of oxygen and propane and then ignites the gas mixture which kills the gophers with a concussive force that also collapses the tunnel systems. While both solutions are effective, gophers from outside of the treated areas will eventually spread back into the area.

I have told my wife I'm about ready to go the Caddyshack route.

Water does not work with this gopher, he simply digs even more dirt up on my lawn. Vibration sticks are questionable since he covered up the stick with more dirt yesterday. However, I hear that it takes 3-4 weeks to convince them to move using this method. Cat - sorry it would have to survive the dawg wanting to "play" with it. This gopher is attacking in an area that is not fenced in so I would have to have the dawg on a lease which is not easy. Plus my poor dog injured herself a few days ago - an injury that will two weeks to recover from.

Here's what I'm thinkin' about doing.
Perimeter defense - vibration sticks and planting of cloves.
Center attack - traps
Perimeter attack - gas bombs - so many that the gopher will haphazardly go into a trap or will die from the all the sulfur in the tunnels.

Don't know about gophers but it works for moles ... pee down the hole! They don't like the smell of human urine.
If you are worried about the neighbors watching you water the lawn, use a gallon jug. Take lots of vitamins, eat asparagus and anything else that really makes your pee stink.

I agree with Kongo's suggestion. ICBM's are available pretty cheap now from the former Soviet Union. Or you could hire Elmer Fudd if he isn't busy with Bugs. Seriously traps seem to be the way to go. I might try that by itself first before multiple fronts.
