| Happy.... Immaculate Conception - December 8 Christian (Roman Catholic) Feast in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Holy day of obligation). Bodhi Day - December 8 Buddhist In the Northern tradition, this day celebrates the Buddha’s attainment of Enlightenment. Hanukkah - December 19-27 (Jewish) Festival of Lights, marks the victory of the Maccabees and rededication of the Temple. It is a celebration of religious freedom and an affirmation of God's saving power. Christmas December 25 (Christian) The celebration of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Kwanzaa December 26 - January 1 (African-American) An African-American celebration honoring African community values and beliefs. And lets not forget... Boxing Day (Canada) The day after Christmas, the Feast of St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, is better known as Boxing Day. St. Lucia Day (December 13th) St. Lucia is Sweden’s Christmastime. St. Lucia Day is when St. Lucia brought something to the poor. St. Lucia wore candles on her head to light up the dark tunnels. Winter Solstice (Pagan) Emperor Aurelian established December 25 as the birthday of the "Invincible Sun" in the third century as part of the Roman Winter Solstice celebrations. 'Eid-ul-Fitr, the Festival of Fast-Breaking The celebration at the end of Ramadan is called 'Eid-ul-Fitr (the Festival of Fast-Breaking). It is a joyous occasion, similar to Christmas in its celebration but with strong religious significance. The giving of a special charity for this occasion is obligatory. Muslims dress in holiday attire, attend a special community prayer in the morning, and visit friends and relatives. Greetings of "'Eid mubarak," or "a blessed 'Eid" are exchanged. In some places, children are given gifts or money by their parents and relatives. Did we forget anyone??? ![]()
