Unhappy I hate my job.

I hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it!!!!! Even with my pessimistic predictions of what my job was going to become I would appear to be an optimistic person. There is only one thing that will keep me going with this job. "At least I have one."

There are mometns in life when we become very neurotic, pessimistic, depressed, lonely. Whatever it is, the emotions, feelings will fade away, though they may come back. Either we can find something interesting enough to enjoy a bit, or if the stress reaches some point, there is only one way out, change the environment.

I had to decide that way a few times in my life; though they all came after months or years pondering over and over many aspects and consequences of such decisions. Once one can see or foresee enough, there is no regret later.

Just hope you can find someone, a friend or so, to share what you are bearing; and you may be able to discuss seriously and without hesitation. That will certainly be very helpful.

Or, you can write something here, a hint, etc. That may help you to see somewhat more clearly.

May God bless you.

Unhappy

About the only thing worse than hating your job is hating the person you are married to. I have had both experiences. At the same time. Fortunately, I am experiencing neither at the moment.

When you figure you spend roughly one-third of your time at work, and another one-half or so sleeping, eating, grooming, and doing other necessary tasks, hating your job doesn't leave much time for enjoyment.

Hope things get better, but from some of your other posts about job stuff, that may be a vain hope.

PR, you impress me as an immensely talented person. I hear you loud and clear about the value of *having* a job, but it's really unfortunate that you're so bummed about its content. What, specifically, bugs you the most about it.

I hope your family life provides a positive counterpoint to your workplace blues.

I view my job as what I have to do during the day to pay the bills. I don't hate it, by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't feel excited by it either and no longer feel loyalty to an employer.

Satisfaction comes from a solid marriage, a great kid, and familial "permission" to indulge my hobbies.

I hope things get better for you.

I agree completely with David above; you are one of the most talented and intelligent people on ABX and I am sure that a better job is in your future.

I know what it is like to hate your job, been there many, many times, but things always seem to work out for those that have the talents that others need. Good luck, I hope things get better for you.

Start sending out your resume. Make contacts and go to interviews. There has got to be something better out there for you. Yes, having a job is great but being unhappy and unfulfilled at your job is deliberately putting yourself through torture. Your work is your basic relationship to reality so it should be a joyous experience and a wonderful adventure, not a daily grind.

Make it happen!

To be honest, lately I've come to value my spare time a bit more than my work. Not that I'm lazy or anything, I go to work, do loads of overtime, even work Sundays if I have to. Never leave early if the workload is high either.

Perhaps that is why I value my spare time so much. I don't really hate my job, but I often wish we could rearrange the work hours a bit, they can be annoying and get in the way many times.

What I used to be was an Oracle DBA/Developer/Systems Analyst. The reorg has made me a programmer. Sounds nice except that I lost on my resume the higher level responsibilities that I throughly enjoyed. I predicted that I would be shoved in a corner to work on Access applications. So far that is true. I have to report to a Project Manager that drives my work instead of being the Systems Analyst that used to do that stuff. It's rare for me to ever be allowed to think of the best plan for development for a customer and to be shoved into programming in Access is absolutely the pits. Access is so easy that it's boring. Oracle DBA was the route I was going. The reason why I have so many computers at home was for the very purpose of training. I have not stopped that. I'm learning mySQL, PostgreSQL, and PHP on my home computers. Even though that type of skillset will not be allowed at work, I'm determined to continue to learn and hopefully find a way to sell that skill to customers that need low-cost client/server solutions for their business. I have always been a fighter (must go inline with my real name ) and this set back simply has given me the drive to strive to improve my skillset further in order to move on.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I'm sorry about venting but I needed to do it in order to get my mindset back on track with getting very serious with what I need to do.

It's good that I'm fighting back by improving my skillset. It's bad because I cannot show as much production level experience on my resume. I'm not young enough to claim that I taught myself a skill and hope that lands me a job-I have to prove that skill in some form of business environment in order to get hired over someone half my age that only has the training.

Well, the resume is your "brochure" for selling a prospective employer on your talents, but its only purpose in life is to get interviews. It needs not to be dishonest, but it's a selling tool. So exercise some creative license in the way that you describe your current position. Specifically, emphasize the previous time period, before you were "put in the corner doing Access programming." When you're in an interview situation, one of the standard questions is "why are you looking." You've got one of the best answers: new management changed my responsibilities to things that don't excite me or challenge me. I'm a go-getter technical heavyweight, so I'm looking to return to the Oracle DBA track."

If I was in your shoes, I'd also be sure to tell interviewers that you're a moderator and frequent contributor at ABXzone. That sends at least three positive messages: you seek responsibility, you like to solve problems, and you know your stuff.

On a different, but sort-of-connected note, do you ever daydream about being independent and applying your database expertise and wide-ranging PC skills as a "this gun's for hire" contractor. I do, but I'm too risk-averse to take the leap. Of course, having a kid who'll start college in two years contributes to that. But it's a pleasant daydream :-)
