| I'm not going to die? A British man who went on a wild spending spree after doctors said he only had a short time to live wants compensation because the diagnosis was wrong and he is now healthy -- but broke. John Brandrick, 62, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer two years ago and told that he would probably die within a year. He quit his job, sold or gave away nearly all his possessions, stopped paying his mortgage and spent his savings dining out and going on holiday... What do you MEAN I'm not going to die? - Yahoo! News

| Oh Man that would be great but sad.I don't think he deserves any money though. He was going to stiff the banks and everyone anyway. Most People put there financial situation in order before they die.Maybe he should have gotten a second opinion first. ![]()

| I agree. They made a mistake, but what he did was carry out a deliberate and unethical plan for two years. It was not an impulse. He was trying to screw the system and ended up doing himself. |

| I can sympathize with the guy...I think a lot of people in his situation might be tempted to do the same (as long as he has no family, kids etc)...single guy, thinks he only has a year to live...why not go on a crazy spending spree...the hospital does bear some responsibility for mis-diagnosing him but he doesn't deserve any compensation...funny story though

| heh heh, I dont think he did anything illegal as stopping payment on his mortgage is not illegal, it just means the clauses in the contract that deal with default would have been activated. The bank always wins in those situations as it sells the property (usually to another mortgagee), and discharges its debt including interest owed and costs with the proceeds. He gave away or sold the rest of his stuff. Even tho he's going to live, which is great news, I cant help having a lot of sympathy for him. I think being told unexpectedly by authoratative people (doctors) that you are going to die would be very traumatic at the time for anyone and different people would react differently and I dont think anyone of us should be critical of how he chose to spend his last few months. It seems the doctors made an honest mistake, but the root cause is obviously inadequate diagnosis due, by the sound of it, to insufficiently developed technology in that area or gaps in the science. Pretty sad really. Hmm, I wonder how each of us would react to news of our impending death? World trip? Shopping? Expensive cars? Restaurants? Gambling? Do nothing? Read books? Hmmm. What would YOU do?
