If everyone lived like you, how many planets would we need?

http://www.earthday.net/Footprint/index.asp

CATEGORY GLOBAL HECTARES
FOOD 1.3
MOBILITY 2.4
SHELTER 2.2
GOODS/SERVICES 4.9
TOTAL FOOTPRINT 10.8

IN COMPARISON, THE AVERAGE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IN YOUR COUNTRY IS 4.7 GLOBAL HECTARES PER PERSON.

WORLDWIDE, THERE EXIST 1.8 BIOLOGICALLY PRODUCTIVE GLOBAL HECTARES PER PERSON.

IF EVERYONE LIVED LIKE YOU, WE WOULD NEED 6 PLANETS.

We need to stop breeding, the planet is suffering from our stupidity, and overpopulation. It makes me mad that the population keeps increasing with no thought as to the consequences. I dunno, mother nature has CRUEL ways of dealing with stupidity, and we're pushing it. I hope people figure this out before we upset her too much. This could get ugly in the next few generations, I hope I don't live to see it. I don't see anything good in the future as far as this goes. As Fraoch said, they're cutting down trees to build another convenience store right by him!!! I'm sick of people "developing" (more like raping the planet like locusts), and calling it "progress"! We'll pay for it eventually, maybe 100 years from now, maybe 1000. We already have paid a little, it's time people wised up. It's not like a credit card, we can't run up a bunch of bills on the plastic, and claim bankruptcy, people do that all the time! No thought about the future, or their children. Just more and more people doing the same pointless, stupid, wasteful things.

Family of 6, I guess my overpopulation of the world is realllly stupid. I advise that making judgement calls of calling people stupid based on this survey could be more carefully worded. I don't like a general blanket statement that calls me stupid for not following the ways of this world.

that flying question did me in. it asked how many hours you fly a year? commercially probably (i answered based on the hours i fly myself ), but i fly more than 50 hours/year and starting next year, hopefully 500 hours/year/ that flying question added another 2.5 planets

also the fact that i live in an apartment building (not a very large unit either

I'm not even going to state my opinion about a site like that, lets just say that people who make sites like that infuriate me.

Well, you can't really react to it (just like I can't). As soon as a person states what they don't like about the site it hits politics and religion of which both topics are not allowed be to discussed per forum rules.

Sorry that you happen to fall into this category, but that's the way it is. It's obviously not as exaggerated as that site makes it seem, but it's ugly. We're screwing up the entire planet, too many people, too many malls, roads, trucks, trains, planes, and automobiles. We're all to blame, and if my "blanket statement" offends you, sorry about that, but that's not going to change my opinion of the world. We're all guilty of it, and if people need to get offended to wake up, so be it! H3ll, I'm not about to see what that says my impact on the world is, I'm sure it's bad. I'm sorry the world is the way it is, sorry that I've offended you, and sorry that I'm not helping much. The fact remains, we're overpopulated, and aren't doing anything about it. We either need to lessen out enviromental impact, or have less people. One or the other, and right now, America as a whole is humungus waste of resources! We drive around pointlessly, we pacakge everything in ten layers of crap, and we live way in excess of what the planet will support. If that upsets you, sorry, but I didn't do it!!! I'm just saying, we need to wake up, and smell our own $}{!T before we burry ourselves in it!!!

I'm single BTW. What doesn't help me is the fact that I pretty much have to drive by myself to work. There isn't anybody close to me that works the same hours I do. I can't take public transportation because they only allow tour buses and buses coming to pick up or drop off Army personnel that are being or were deployed. I only put 25 flying hours for the purpose of visiting family in the US.

CATEGORY ACRES
FOOD 4.9
MOBILITY 11.9
SHELTER 9.4
GOODS/SERVICES 19.3
TOTAL FOOTPRINT 46

IN COMPARISON, THE AVERAGE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IN YOUR COUNTRY IS 24 ACRES PER PERSON.
WORLDWIDE, THERE EXIST 4.5 BIOLOGICALLY PRODUCTIVE ACRES PER PERSON.

IF EVERYONE LIVED LIKE YOU, WE WOULD NEED 10.2 PLANETS.

Out of curiosity I did a little test of my own...

Quote:
Food Footprint

1. How often do you eat animal based products? (beef, pork, chicken,
fish, eggs, dairy products)
Never (vegan)

2. How much of the food that you eat is processed, packaged and not
locally grown (from more than 200 miles away)?
Very little. Most of the food I eat is unprocessed, unpackaged and
locally grown.

Goods Footprint

3. Compared to people in your neighborhood, how much waste do you
generate?
Much less

Shelter Footprint

4. How many people live in your household?
1 person

5. What is the size of your home?
500-1000 square feet

6. Which housing type best describes your home?
Green-design residence

7. Do you have electricity in your home?
Yes

Mobility Footprint

8. On average, how far do you travel on public transportation each week
(bus, train, subway or ferry) ?
0 miles

9. On average, how far do you go by motorbike each week (as a driver or
passenger)?
0 miles

10. On average, how far do you go by car each week (as a driver or
passenger)?
0 miles

11. Do you bicycle, walk, or use animal power to get around?
Most of the time

12. Approximately how many hours do you spend flying each year?
Never fly

Quiz results

CATEGORY ACRES
FOOD 1.7
MOBILITY 0
SHELTER 3
GOODS/SERVICES 2
TOTAL FOOTPRINT 7

IN COMPARISON, THE AVERAGE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IN YOUR COUNTRY IS 24 ACRES PER PERSON.
WORLDWIDE, THERE EXIST 4.5 BIOLOGICALLY PRODUCTIVE ACRES PER PERSON.

IF EVERYONE LIVED LIKE YOU, WE WOULD NEED 1.5 PLANETS.
Changing answer 7 to "No" results in a total footprint of 4 acres. Care to live without electricity in Phoenix, AZ?

Changing answer 7. to "Yes, with energy conservation and efficiency" results in a total footprint of 6 acres.

If you think through these results, the people who created this "Quiz" want you to come away with the knowledge that there are already too many people on our Planet. I've got a couple of suggestions to solve this problem. Either way will work...
