Lightbulb Issue resolution website

Friends,

I have used and worked with PC’s for over 20 years, I love them. They are definitely a passion of mine and most of you understand this or you wouldn’t be using a site like this.

Throughout all that time I’ve noticed something about the internet, most of the knowledge on PC issues is scattered all over the place in hundreds of forums in thousands of forum posts, on blogs and personal sites here and there. Even sites that show you the issue then tease you with the answer until you pay to find out what the solutions are, though most of us here may know that you can find the solution for free if you look hard enough.

The proposition

So here is what I’ve been thinking. Let us all join together in a community effort to create a location, a repository of knowledge, a place where we can unite all of these question and answers. A website that we can all say we contributed to the forming of, the creation of. A place where we can help ourselves and others to resolve the issues they may have with their PC at that moment, and future issues. Placed into a categorized listing of articles like,

Hardware:
  • CPU
  • Memory
  • Motherboard
  • Sound
  • Video
  • Power

This will also be easily searchable, so someone can just go to the site and type in what problem they are having and hopefully we have the solution in one of our article categories , also the CMS will be search engine friendly in hopes that these solutions will start popping up on search engines.

What I would like to start with are all of the questions I may have asked over the years and gotten answers to myself or with the help of you all. I think this is probably the fastest way for us to start the database going. I have a Joomla based CMS hosted up and functioning though it still needs some work to flow like I would like. I'm willing to pay for the frontend site and hosting. It’s a start and a location for us to submit articles and have them go through an approval process. I personally have had many issues I’ve searched for help for over the years and I can think of them right now as I write this. Just recently I had an issue with one of my CPU cores maxing out all the time, it came down to me pulling everything out of my pc and cleaning it then reseating it all. Seeing deferred procedure calls maxing the CPU was what led me to that conclusion but if I hadn’t scoured the web I may not have figured it out.

There may be sites out there that have something like this going on, or that charge for it, but I still feel like there is a place on the internet for a large community compiled database of issue resolutions. That with some initial setup this site could be a runaway train of sorts.

If you would like to work with me on this project and are familiar with CMS, web design or are and English teacher (i.e. editor) LOL, Lord knows I could use some grammar correction here and there! Drop me a PM so we can talk about this, I would like to call you on the phone so we can see if you would be a good fit for this project.

I have sent an e-mail to the ABXzone team in hopes that they will want to work with me on this project but I have yet to hear back from them. Hopefully they would like to work with me on this and or figure out some sort of partnership.

Thanks,
Lucas

PS: This is an open site idea, concepts, suggestions and idea are always welcome, I just want it to succeed.

Re: Issue resolution website

In my opinion - this is an impossible task. The same problem exists in the medical field or any other topic for that matter. There is no way you are going to get all the other computer sites to quit and go to one site.

The best I could see would be a Google type search engine that deals with technical computer information only...

Heck - even the tech companies themselves can't get their own websites correct.

Re: Issue resolution website

As BoFinn says Great idea but difficult if not impossible to implement. Don't forget some of these tech sites get funding by the number of hits they get. It would mean that only one site would get that funding.

The idea of googleing for tech info only is more plausible

Re: Issue resolution website

Sounds a lot like an old website called CUSL2.com If you owned that motherboard, you likely were a member there. ASUS used to refer people to it from their website forum.

Re: Issue resolution website

I think I wasn't clear. I really don't want to impede on this forum or other forums. I only want to take information that I have used or found useful and compile it there. I guess I see it as a resting place for info. There are certain issues we have all had with our PC's over the years that we could easily remember and just fill in a template and submit to this site. That is all, not asking all these sites to stop functioning. I would never want to loose ABXzone or any of the other forums that i frequent, if anything i would like to tie into them some how and make it easy for people to become members here.

Does that make more sense?

thanks for all the comments btw (: Even if i don't get a bunch of people to sign up i will be slowly compiling data myself over time. Heck even if family and friends only use it i would be happy. I just want there to be someplace where I "know" i can send someone to find a resolution to the problem at hand.

Re: Issue resolution website

So pretty much you are saying you want to create a Knowledge Database?

Those exist out there already as well. Yes, it could be done better!

Re: Issue resolution website

My thoughts exactly. I realy feel that a community run one, would do great, if we used templates. I haven't had time to work on the site, because our basement got flooded, but once i'm ready i'll give the addy to everyone. If anyone feels like they would like to contribute with content management and or writing just let me know.

thanks for all the input guys!

Welcome to the Average-Geek.com

Actually I like this concept...sort of a home for practical solutions to everyday issues that arise for both the computer literate and the not-so-geeky out there...format looks simple and user friendly. One of the main issues with most Tech oriented sites is the perception that they are unapproachable or that the user will be faced with hostile forum warriors and answers phrased in such overly complicated jargon that they are useless. From what i am reading here, this is not intended to be a replacement or competitor to any tech site, but rather a simple compilation of user-experience based solutions in an approachable format. Will BM and watch...GL sorrow!
