Leasing a Computer.....software question.

I am forced to lease a laptop from my school. I never use it in class, even though that is what it is designed for. Even if i don't accept the laptop, i am charged 450.00 a semester for a POS laptop that is 4-5 years old technology wise, and was only 1000.00 new.

If i am paying for a lease on the computer and all necessary licenses, am i not intitled to all the support related software that comes with the computer? Like XP, OFFICE, and a few of the programs?

I don't think so, unfortunately.

If they are on the computer, then "that" is considered your leased copy.

In fact, they don't likely even have copied per laptop...if its like a corporate environment (since they seem to do this with a lot of laptops), they probably have an I.S. group that has corporate copies that get installed on each laptop in the beginning of the lease.

dang-it! i wanted to go and yell at them some more.

How about them telling us to treat it like it is our own laptop and do whatever we want, then getting yelled at because i installed linux? i have quite a few issues with these people, along with the 1100 aviation students at my school

Man, that is seriously messed up! For what you pay after 3 semesters you could buy a decent laptop and I'm sure Dell, Compaq/HP or Gateway would be happy to contract with the school for cheaper and even provide support.

You should start a campaign on campus to change this BS. The easiest thing to do would be to just print out a bunch of flyers and put them up all over the school telling people how they are getting ripped off. Give them the Dean's phone number and have them tell their parents to call too. If you can get the alumni association involved it will have the greatest effect. That's where they get a lot of money from.

you know what is funny? All 1100 aviation students (thats my category) know this, and we have tried fighting it for 4 years now.

They won't even let us buy our own laptops because then we wont get some software that the flight department doesn't let us use anyway BS!!

BTW: these are contracted thru Gateway, next models we are getting are DELL's. and they are finally switching to a yearly program, which makes the money a little better spent, but not much.
