| Let's Make A Differance ! Now that we all seem to have high end machines that are running pretty well, I think we could try to do some good for others outside the CUSL2C world. Anybody interested in helping with cancer research should check this out- Intel - United Devices Cancer Research Project I picked up on this because my 32yr old brother has brain cancer, and I felt like my hands were tied as far as being able to help him. I know this may not help him directly, but it could help someone else in the near future. I've been running this program for about a month now and barely know it's even there. I donate 500MB disk space and it runs as a low level windows program, so it dosen't interfere with day to day operation. I don't know if we have to get CJ's permission or not, but we could start a CUSL2C team and maybe put a link on the front page. Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

| that's a good idea ED_H, however, i feel inclined to point something out. when i first heard of this program, about 2 months ago i thought wow, kewl. this is good. my mother died of cancer last year, so i was very interested in seeing what was going on.... and i went and read. and, unless they have changed their policies, UD also SELLS extra CPU cycles for their own profit. how many they sell, and when and where is left to their discretion... that i found reprehensible. i have nothing against the program, but i do have a problem with a company giving the impression of philanthropy, and at the same time turning a profit.. altho several of my co-workers here have been running it for the last 2 months personally i run the Folding@Home project....it is a totally non-profit program run by stanford. they simulate protein folding in order to understand how and why genomes fail, ie diseases etc..... i can't explain it perfectly, heres the site: http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/Cosm/ just my 2c cryogen

| ED_H, first of all I'm sorry to hear about your brother. I hope he recovers! Recently I've had some personal drama in my life too so I know what you are talking about. Like the site says every 1 out of 4 people will have to deal with it sooner or later. Anything that can be done to help research is per defenition a great idea! Even when it's a small effort, it will help. BUT: Reading around on the messageboard on that site it seems there is a lot of trouble with that UD client. I'll have to do some more reading before I decide to jump in. But thx for the post.

| Cryogen- I was not aware of them selling extra cycles. I certainly don't want anybody doing anyting they are uncomfortable with. Any time I check what is running in the background on my machine it seems to be legit, but I may be wrong, as I'm not all that tech savy to begin with. Just trying to do some good in a not so good world. Thanks for your input.

| Hi ED_H, Sorry to hear about your brother. I hope it's not too late and that he gets the cancer beat. You're heart is the right place. More people need to contribute in some way to aid in research to find cures for cancer. About two years ago my mother nearly lost her life to cancer and last January my brother's wife died from complications of the treatment that did cure the cancer, but it wreaked havoc on her immune system. She was only 42 years old. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread so if anyone comes up with a good way to help the cause. I'll look into cryo's suggestion too. It would be great if we could find a way that the members here could contribute to the fight against cancer as a group and make a big difference. Perry |

| Ed_H... My wife died of Cancer 10 years ago at age 30...Since then I've tried to do everything possible to help both victims and their family. Unfortunately (and I know this Oh Too Well) there are a number of scams out there that take advantage of both the victims and their family...All I'm saying is to be careful, a few cycles is nothing compared to what some have experienced...I'm terribly sorry to hear about your brother; I wish both him, you, and your family the very best possible.

i agree 100% there ED_H we need a lot more of that sentiment! the cycles they sell would be invisible to you, there is no way for you to follow that that i am aware of... I AM NOT discouraging this program nor it's use, it is a GREAT cause, and worthy of all the help it can get, i simply have an argument against the companies business practices... it's good you brought it to this forum, i have been runing the folding 1 fer some time now, and have no idea whyi didn't post about it, ot this one earlier, just one of those things that slipped through the cracks of my brain take it easy cryogen

| If there are other programs out there that we can agree on, I certainly would not be opposed to switching. This just happened to be the one that I came across first. Possibly we could set up a thread with just links and let everyone know what is out there to choose from.

| This is a worthwhile idea, more links with these type of program(s) would be welcome by many here, I'm sure. ![]()
