| Here in Australia Live 8 was slated for a 9.30pm start, going thru til 10.00am the following morning. A looooooong night for anyone wishing to attempt it. I made it ....! Amaaaaaaaaaazing. Phenomenal. Kudos to all involved - the artists, the production teams, and the audiences. To get that co-ordinated is a task almost beyond comprehension. Just awesome. So - highlights: Pink Floyd - likely the single biggest artists on this bill. Reunited for this event. They did a 4 or 5 song set culminating in Comfortably Numb sung by Waters as well as Gilmour. The placard said it all: Pink Floyd reunited. Pigs have flown. U2 - opened the bill in London - It's a beautiful day - great opener - goosebumps - turn it up! (Note I'm not referencing the real opener which was U2 + Paul McCartney and Sgt. Pepper's - it's claimed he said if he didn't open and close the bill he wouldn't perform. If this is true (and he did open and close - but nowhere near the best act to close) - he is a real loser. Robbie Williams - best frontman in the biz at the moment. The 150,000+ crowd at Hyde Park London loved him and singing along to Angels. Coldplay with Verve's Richard Ashcroft - dueting Bittersweet Symphony - powerful moment. Considering the tragic tale of the song and the Rolling Stone's involvement with Verve, this was powerful in more ways than one. Madonna - incensed by Mariah Carey's earlier jibes that she mimes during her concerts (true of some parts of her performances), her set was 100% live. Maddy isn't a great singer (competent but not a great vocalist), so she tried hard, and pretty-much got it together. Annie Lennox - don't like her personally but what an amazing singer - great, pertinent set. With video on screen showing her in Africa with AIDS sufferers, her set saw her solo on piano plus vocals, then with band - she is an incredibly soulful singer - just great. Bob Geldof - just one track Tell me why I don't like Mondays - his "thankyou for letting me do that" at the end was very humble - Geldof is a true activist and contrary to his critics (remember my thoughts on critics - my dog has the IQ to be a critic), he really believes in what he is doing. Congratulations Sir BG on all your work and continuing efforts to bring attention to this most tragic situation - it will be interesting to see what comes of G8. Sting - possibly the most professional set of the concerts - he is a true musician and performer, and unlike many of today's artists, a true master of his craft. His re-working of Every breath you take's lyrics aimed at the G8 leaders was apt. Black Eyed Peas - again, not an act I really dig, but they are great live - really strong vocalists/rappers. Great at working the crowd, and they all have an amazing set of lungs on them! Velvet Revolver - Guns'n'Roses without Axl - they are a great live act - very strong. Don't know their stuff but enjoyed their performance, as did the crowd. Green Day - these boys are great live and no exception this time. Closed with Queen's We are the champions - great stuff. REM - even with his unusual facial bandana, Michael Stipe and the boys are consistently excellent live and always get the audience's praise. Stevie Wonder with Rob Thomas - Stevie always astounds me - he is without doubt one of the greatest contemporary musicians ever, and live he is a master - class act, and great duet with Thomas. Not to dwell on any, but there were a few lowlights - some artists should've stayed at home, or should have 'let it go' years ago. Included were (sad to see) poor Brian Wilson (don't do drugs kiddies), A-Ha, Roxy Music, Ms. Dynamite, as well as some poor sets from otherwise good live artists including Duran Duran (tho Rome seemed to have some sound issues from what I could discern) as well as Joss Stone (great singer but flat set and the audience didn't get into it - even she shrugged her shoulders in hopelessness). But overall an amazing event and one to feel proud to have witnessed. Check it or any highlights that may be screened in your country any time soon, and EMI are releasing the LIVE 8 event on DVD in November. Make Poverty History
