Mechanics - I Need some car help

I have a 91 Grand prix and the turn signals recently stopped working but the hazard lights still work. When I try to use the turn signals the light just stays on (no blinking). I've looked under the dash and I believe I found the unit that controls the hazards but can't find what controls the regular turn signals. I thought that they would be similar. I don't have the maintance book so I'm really just working with my best guess on this though. Does someone out there know what I should be looking for? Thanks

Haynes Repair manuals are about $5-10 at your local auto shop. It'll have a step by step on how to repair everything on your car. ;-)

EDIT: Sorry I couldn't be of more help, all I really know how to do is basic stuff with cars (change oil, replace muffler, rotors/brakes/calipers) but my dad knows how to do a lot more, so he has those books. Figured it might be of help to you.

When did you buy your last Haynes manual? I just bought one for $19.99! It sounds like your flasher unit is bad. They are fairly cheap so I would replace that and see if it fixes the problem. First double check that all the bulbs are working.

I figure it is probably the flasher but are the hazards and turn signals run by the same unit? I only found one unit and it appears to control the hazards but it's hard to be sure if it controls turn signals too since I can't unplug it and see if the turn signals stop working because they are always not working .

I think you would have 2 different units for the hazards and the turn signals. The hazards are considered more critical and may be controlled by a relay. Just because the hazards work doesn't mean the flasher is good.

Auto Zone has a free online manual for your car. You should find enough info there to make your repair.

I would check your fuse box/panel and flasher, then check the bulbs individually. What you're describing can be the result of a faulty bulb.

Usually what tha means is one of your turn signal lights needs to be replaced if one go's bad it kills the flash.

You are right they are different. The flasher you may find behind the glove compartment, behind the panel to the left of the steering column. and some bring it right in the fuse box.

The manual should tell you exactly where it is.

Last one I bought was for $9.99 for a Toyota Tercel, forget the years it covered, but the car is a 1989.

Also check your running lights in the front a lot of times these will eventually corrode and get rusty inside the connection. Sometimes the bulb will get stuck and you will need needle nose pliers to get the element out. That happened tome a few months back with my little nissan truck.

Fuse was fine and the lights were fine. Turns out it was the flasher unit after all. What confused me earlier was I couldn't find a separate flasher unit for the turn signals but it turns out it is on the other side of the car hidden up next to the steering column. I bought a replacement for $4 and it works now. Thanks everyone.
