Thumbs up Wow, that's awesome!!

I always wondered why they didn't fill a tire with foam and let it breathe. Something like that looks even better, you don't have to worry about the foam soaking up water! That's a kick **** idea, much better than air in a tire. I check my tire pressure about once a week, I can't stand the way my truck drives when a tire gets low. I'm lucky, a good friend of mine works in a tire shop, so He does my allignments and stuff for free. I just have to fix the shopp's puter and keep everything running smooth in that department. I got some really nice cooper all terrain tires for my truck at cost, they're P285 75R 16s. That's the equivilant to a 33"x10" tire. It lifted my truck another 1.5" and gave it better gas mileage because it turns less rpm to go the same speed now. I just had to re-program my transmission and speedo.

That is a great idea!

I guess this is where advances in material science gets us. Those "spokes" must be super stiff, yet also flexible above a certain compression force. The torsional strength must be high too, just think of the sideways force exerted in high-speed turns.

Such a tire would be impossible to underinflate or overinflate, so it will always ride safely, and it would be impossible to puncture. Since changing a tire on a busy highway is so dangerous, and improperly inflated tires can lead to accidents, it will save lives.

BTW on Discovery Channel Canada last night (Daily Planet) they had a short feature on filling tires with nitrogen. They talked with a physicist about it.

They are producing the nitrogen using a small membrane system and the physicist said there were the following benefits:

- reduced tire damage from oxidation
- reduced wheel damage from corrosion
- no rust caught in valve stem, potentially keeping it from closing and causing a leak
- reduced permeation through the tire - oxygen can pass right through the rubber without actually passing through an actual leak. Nitrogen is less susceptible.
