Must Hollywood alter everything?

Why does Hollywood insist on making sci-fi if they are going to completely change the story?

I was really upset with the Minority Report and how Spielberg completely altered it from Philip K. Dick's story...

Now they are going after Isaac Asimov and one if his most popular books I Robot... Link. But i will reserve finall judgement untill I see it. Oh... Will Smith is in it.

What do you think? Should directors alter classics in order to have mass audience appeal?

Only in minor ways to make it work more in a movie media format..but they should NEVER change the story at all....and they nearly always tweak it....as if they were smart enough to improve on the writer's story.

Indeed. I was so mad at the Minority Report... I was expecting to revisit the world of Do Android Dream of Electric Sheep (Blade Runner) instead i got something else, and a completly different story to boot. Such a shame.

Lets hope I Robot turns out ok in the end.

It's like Will Smith opened up Isaac Asimov's head and took a crap on his brain.

The movie will suck ***.

I´m sure i read that book. Many, many years ago. Along with lot of other Asimov stories.

Can youo help me what this one was about? I can remember something about a crime, a robot that can read thoughts, a female artist (i think) fallen in love with a robot, etc...

Greetings

Dru

P.S.: was very disappointed about Minority Report, Solaris, Starship soldiers, etc. etc.
Do you know on which story "bicentennial man" was based on?
Edit: Ok. it´s also from asimov. another good book, transformed into a bad movie, "starring" robin williams!?!

Yup, Hollywood certainly likes to mess up history.

Take the film about the capturing of the German Enigma machine off a submarine in WW2. Film portrays it as an American action.
Humph! USA wasn't even in the war when that happened.

But, kids in the furture will believe the film.

I saw a black&white film about the inventor John Ericsson and the battle between monitor and merrimac. In the film monitor shot merrimac to pieces. So for about a decade i always thought monitor won and merrimac was sunk.

Recently there was a story on discovery about finding and recovering monitors turret and in that story they described that neither monitor or merrimac could seriously damage each other and the battle ended in a tie after a full day of hammering each other.

Personally I dislike Will Smith as an actor...

I have always been a Sci-Fi fan. I like Old School Sci-Fi! The kinda that DIDN'T have computer special effects, but good actors that would play the part! I say let's bring back movies that would entertain your mind, not wow you with computer generated effects.

That's exactly why I've always been such a big Dr. Who fan. It has cheesy special f/x but who cares? They have stories that rivet and entertain you! I don't give a flip about special f/x if the story is good....even better if the acting is good to boot!
