Exclamation New high tech crimes hit...

While we were on vacation our neighbors mailbox got hit...

They got his bank numbers, credit card numbers, etc., and wiped him out financially b/4 he even knew what happened.

The detectives said this is almost impossible to stop...form a new company, run the credit cards up and cash in.

This new wave white coller stuff is getting wild!!

Me too!!

The scary part is they got his bank statement and cleaned out his account too.

You know those offers for new credit cards you constantly get in the mail? They can intercept those and open an account in your name, run it up and say bye - bye!!

I've learned of a website that you can stop all those offers from coming - all on one site. I'll see if I can get ahold of it and post it.

Thumbs up High tech Crime

Ozzie,
If you can come up with that website, I will worship the ground that you walk on.
TIA

OMG...!! So much for checking things as far as the banks are concerned..... I think you would need some pretty well falsified documents overhere to pull off that stuff overhere although my trust and confidence in banks and the government isn't that high... I never use credit-cards (I don't even have one), only the ATM....

Are your neighbours insured for things like that???

Found this from this web page

http://www.wrcbtv.com/special_reports/onside1.cfm

This info is found towards the bottom of the page

"How to Stop Credit Card Offers

Here's the number you need to call if you want to stop credit card offers from flooding your mailbox: 1-888-5-OPT-OUT... that's 1-888-567-8688. You will be asked for your social security number because that's what's used to track your credit."

Also posted on

http://onmoney.lycos.com/Editorial/B...howtostop.html

This isn't the all-in-one info you might have been looking for, but it works. All card offers have stopped coming to my house. At the bottom of the last link I posted there is an address for Direct Marketing Association. You can contact them and take your name off of junk mail lists also.

My mailbox is so clean!

Hope this helps a bit.

(Don't know if it's proper to post the phone #, so if any moderators have to edit the # out, go ahead. The link contains all the info.)

Thanks kadron!!

Thanks for being sensitive about posting phone numbers - this is one time the numbers are appreciated...

I haven't gotten a return call from my contact yet for the all-in-one page but will post when I get it.

Thanks for the linkage.

SZ - the credit card companies are well aware of this practice and ultimately removed the charges from his account(s). I've not yet heard what the bank will do. He may be S.O.L.

You're right.
However he probably deserves it for the time and effort spent on this board.
