Re: New Russian Jet Fighter

Not to mention that dog fighting is a dead art. It's beyond visual range missiles all the way, these days.

Re: New Russian Jet Fighter

Any other country could have a two generation lead on us in tech, but without the money, the experience and the means to train those who man it, they will die just as quickly as they would without the two generation gap in tech.

I may be a blind patriot, but I still feel our military, if needed, could dominate any other country in any type of conflict, long or short term.

As someone else pointed out, big deal, so it maneuvers x-times better than what we have, but what kind of radar cross section does it have?

If you can see it, you can kill it.

Low radar signature planes are exaclty built for BVR missles. If you can't lock on to the plane your missle is worthless. That video is impressive, but not a single maneurver you would ever do in combat. Carrying your energy is paramount to survival. All those maneuvers bleed energy down to zero and only recover because of amazing power. Every one of those moves you saw equal death in air combat maneuvering.

Dang. No wonder she always turns just in time to kick me in the stones. All this time I thought it was those combat booties I wear around the house.

Copy that, but Vostok was an equally ridiculous demonstration and caused the U.S. to abandon the smarter X-15 for...spam in a can. About the only good thing that came of it was gazillions of dollars poured into the space program.

Did you know the Soviets killed four dogs in their space program between '60 and '61?
I find that pretty hard to forgive.

Sensor technology research is bound to catch up sooner or later. I can't find it now, but the Swedish Defense Research Agency described a technique a while back that could potentially defeat any form of stealth technology (since even absorbing or dispersing radar energy is detectable against a reference). When that finally happens, you can't unring the bell, so to speak.

Not to mention the fact that the prevailing strategy is to kill radar grids with HARMs as the first order of business, then take out the airfields and as many planes as possible before they can even scramble. Even so, guerrillas on the Balkan downed an F-117 with shoulder-fired SAMs, heat-seekers I believe. You can't get away from hot exhaust.

There have been no aerial combat between forces of equal power since WWII.

Re: New Russian Jet Fighter

I'm a ground pounder by trade....my expertise with air consisted of jumping out of them and calling in "fast movers" for a strike.....

And an occassional airdrop resupply.....

having said that....

After being around our Air Force for nigh on 25 years....

We'd win against that jet----or any other jet.....

Superior equipment
Superior training
Superior tactics

The best logistics in the world to back it all up---

and----above all----our pilots as a group are far superior as they get better training, more actual air hours and more simulation time---again using superior tactics, equipment and technology.

Other countries have great smaller groups of pilots-----but as a whole group----nothing can match our flyboys.....

Same for our Navy......
