Sorry, I smell stolen election coming. McCain technically isn't legal to run for President, he was born in the Panama Canal Zone, and the Constitution states, that you have to be at least 35 years old, a natural born citizen of the United States, and have lived in the United States 14 years.

Also sorry to say, for all intents and purposes, the cold war never ended.

You got that right. The F22 would win anyway, long before it was ever seen. That Russian plane may maneuver well, but it's about as stealthy as a barn made out of tin foil.

The capacities of this airplane may be impressive, but to defend against it may need other new technologies than to build similar or better fighters. For example, thinking about new technologies to detect, lock-in, follow-up and destroy it may offer broader and open view to find an approach to fight.

The capacities of human brain is far more complex and imaginative than the fighter machine. As Russia is increasingly trying to rebuild its power in an intimidating behavior, surely there will be some similarly aggressive counterpart coming into political and military arena. That is the human trail.

What did we see as the result of communism in China and Soviet Union, where military power is the top priority? The leader(s) may feel intoxicated with the power, but that is really stupid.

That Russian fighters are more maneuverable than US isn't new, though. That was the story with the MiG-29 as well, it could outmaneuver an F-15 handily. Generally, they've suffered badly from less than perfect engines, they used to have black exhaust and would need to be serviced (or swapped out) with very short intervals. That's improved, but I would bet they still don't have the longevity of US engines. (Total cost may be the same, though, since Russians know how to be frugal when building complex machinery.)

Then there's the fact that when Russian pilots put on a show, they really put on a show. Back in the cold war days, losing an airframe because you tried to do one Pugachev Cobra too many was basically OK, just as long as everything up to the point of the crash made people go "eeeeh". (They even crashed nice. There was one at Le Bourget where the pilot aimed the plane away from the crowds and ejected so low the chute barely opened.) Their pilots have always been great fliers, as good or better than US pilots (regardless of what the movies tell you).

As for the political situation, the F-22 and F-35 projects are pretty much under way, the F-22 will be built until 2011 at least (180+ airframes). Beyond those, I have no idea what's cooking, but I think the thought is to have them be the main models until 2025 at least.

The F-22 is pretty nice, also has thrust vectoring, but it's hella expensive at $130M+ a pop (you get 3 SU-30's per F-22). If the USAF let their best pilot take one of those babies for a spin with little care for what he did, I'm sure he could pull some nice moves too. Though I think that if a Russian saw that performance, he'd outdo it for the hell of it.

Stealth is no panacea. It works great against nations with no air force to talk about, though.
