| No Torrentspy.com for U.S I went to torrentspy.com today to search a few things and this came up. Torrentspy Acts to Protect Privacy Sorry, but because you are located in the USA you cannot use the search features of the Torrentspy.com website.Torrentspy's decision to stop accepting US visitors was NOT compelled by any Court but rather an uncertain legal climate in the US regarding user privacy and an apparent tension between US and European Union privacy laws. We hope you understand and will take the opportunity to visit one of these other fine websites: |

| Try Tor and hope you get an end node that's in Europe, that should work... A bit finicky, though...

| On a related note Canadians watch for Patriot Act abuse The controversial Patriot Act in the U.S. continues to loom over its northern neighbour as the potential risks of cross-border data transfer threaten to undermine Canadian privacy. http://www.itworldcanada.com/Pages/D...73&sub=1513458 |

| Just out of curiosity, what would be some of the things one would use torrentspy.com to search for?

| I just pulled this off Wikipedia: "On May 29, 2007, A federal judge ordered TorrentSpy, a torrent website, to begin monitoring its users' activities and to submit these logs to the Motion Picture Association of America. TorrentSpy's attorney, Ira Rothken, has stated that TorrentSpy would likely turn off access to U.S. users before it started monitoring anyone, since such monitoring is in violation of TorrentSpy's own privacy policy." I've never installed a P2P client on my PC as I really don't want to open it up to those with nefarious intentions. So, all this "torrent" stuff has passed me by and I don't know much about it, other than people use it to pirate music, movies and games off the internet. Are there any legitimate uses for torrent networks? (Unless, of course, one considers piracy a legitimate pastime...) I'm genuinely curious.

| As far as I know there are no legitimate uses for torrents. You may be able to download uncopyrighted material, but I'm sure that's a vast minority of traffic. Its basically like Napster, but for any kind of content, not just music.

| Linux ISOs are often available as torrents. Also, several companies have struck deals with BitTorrent (the company) to use the technology for distribution.

| There are legitimate downloads. Pretty much any open source application as well as some large game patches are made available on torrents.. Open source is of little or no interest to capitalists however, so you can pretty much bet torrentspy is just the first of many sites to be forced to close or move off-shore... |

| But even with legitimate uses, one still has to install the client on one's PC or network, yes? Doesn't that open a gaping security hole that can be exploited?
