Angry Olympics: Banish the ISU! (here we go again).

So there they are...... 5 Olympic skaters nearing the end of the Short Track: 1000 meter finals......
just 20 meters before the finish, the Chinese guy KNOWING he wasnt going to win without desperate measures tried to squeeze in to try and up to pass Apollo Ohno (who was clearly going to get the Gold), then causes a 4-man wipeout...... leaving the trailing Aussie, who was way behind.. not a chance for a win, sails thru the finish, last man standing, and the the judges awards him the gold!! WHATS UP WITH THAT?
The "judges" (for lack of a better word), had the option to re-start the race, which would have made sense.
*shaking head*. I think I'm going to enter the Olympics in 2006 with a CUSL2 mobo strapped to one foot , a P2B to the other, with a skin tight racing suit with the ASUS logo on it, and see if I can't pull down a metal (while filiing my nails) . .

(methinks Wulffie will be skipping the skating competitions on 2006).

I saw that one too...they should've rerun that one.
Appolo was all set for the gold and got cheated out of it. The US hasn't pulled a gold medal in that one for a really long time and I was rooting for him.

The race just b/4 that one was a wipe out too. The guy that caused it was getting passed and put his hand on the passers knee to hold him back - wiped out a few there too and the judges didn't even see it. It shows clearly on the video...

Interesting. I watched a heat with a Canadian in the lead, a Chinese right behind and the Chinese guy bumped the skate of the Canadian and both went down. Just after the last corner.

I guess fair has nothing to do with it.

I guess it just doesn't matter who's the best, it's who can cheat the best without getting caught. It's a sad time we're living in.

The "Olympics" are becoming a joke, with the figure skating fiasco, and now the speed skating finals...Just terrible. It's all about politics now.

NICE SHOT there Ozzie! The worst of it is that Apolo Ohno was injured with that cheap shot. Haven't heard any details yet but he got a pretty severe laceration in his leg.

I hope he is ok. Those skates are so sharp that they could easily cut deep enough to make the chances of him skating again the way he used to an impossibility.

In defense of that Korean skater, that picture makes it look a lot worse than it was. His arm was out to the side when he slipped and because he was on the inside and they were so close together it hit Ohno on his way down. You can tell from the video that he didn't actually grab at him. This is just how short track racing is. The racers except these risks before they start.

If the best ski jumper in the world makes his jump just as a strong head wind blows and he loses because of it, sure he'll be upset but that's one of the hazards that everyone excepts before they start.

Watched the replay and got the medical report on Ohno. It appears that while he probably will be able to race his next event, he probably would NOT have been able to re-run the race tonight (3 cm cut inside thigh, 6 stiches).... so a re-start would have gained him a DNF instead of the Silver. Even so, I'd have felt better about it if the officials were permitted by ISU rules to explain their reasoning. At least nobody tried to give the KOREAN the Gold!

FWIW, I agree with Proto about the Korean. Watch speed skaters' stride and arm motion. It looks more like things went bad at the worst possible time. Seems likely in such a tight pack at speed: a slight flinch in a turn would be all it takes to lose an edge & crash. In fact, collisions are fairly common in short-track.

His injury was a 3cm laceration to the thigh sewn up with 6 stitches. He was cut by his own skate. I am not sure this compares to the figure skating thing though. Accidents happen in sports. Falls are a common occurence in speed skating, and are accepted as part of the sport. Crashes take innocent drivers our of Nascar races and nobody cries for a rerun of the race. If they had decided to restart this race, the American couldn't have even gotten silver since he was incapable of skating with the fresh stiches in the cut in his leg. Luck was on the Aussie's side today. Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good. If you watched the medal ceremony, Apolo was very supprotive of the Aussie and not complaning about the silver. It is the first gold medal in the history of Winter Olympics for Australia.

Thumbs up RE:OZzie

Great pic Ozzie!, thanks for the contribution .

RE The injury : I started this thread B4 I heard about the injury,
it sounds like Ohno wouldn't have been able to skate had they restarted anyway... , maybe the judges didn't vote for a do-over, because it would take too long to assess all the possible injuries , if any of the 4 skaters, who knows *shrug*.
