I don't believe people glorified or idolized JPII... I call it great admiration and respect for a man who was so unselfish in his love for his God and all the people who's lives he touched. I'm not even Catholic... but it doesn't take much to see how many things this man did for ALL people.

NBC talked to Henry Kissinger today and asked him how he thought John Paul stacked up to other great people in recent history. He said he was probably one of the greatest men in the last century. That may be a tad too much but I think many people forget how he took a stand against communism and met with world leaders in a way that opened the lines of communication between them. Does Solidarity ring a bell?

Yes he led the Catholic Church but he inspired people of all faiths and has positively affected the lives of millions of people. That is what he will always be remembered for...

Goodbye John Paul... and thank you.

Very well, let's talk about the man.

Ousting women for practicing birth control and not putting his foot down when the whole widespread pedophile problem amongst the clergy was exposed is nothing short of complete apathy for his supposed congregation and very poor characterisitcs of a leader.

The Pope was a puppet of one of the most powerful and corrupt religious institutions, hes not holy in the least, I can't stand to hear people referring to him as he were some divine being. Hes was a man who was given lots of power and authority and he squandered nearly all of it. He had many chances to step up and update his views and opinions on pressing issues that were clearly archaic by contemporary standards but didn't. Hopefully his successor will improve and correct these shortcomings and start saving what little face Roman Catholic's have left.

I'm sorry if any of you disagree.

His master said to him, 'Well done, my good and faithful servant....Come, share your master's joy.' - Matt, ch25

PS to some of you commenting in this thread - please do not turn this into a heated debate. Make another thread if you want to debate religon or JPII's contributions to mankind.

Is this thread specifically dedicated to the Pope's death or does it include his life?

6 degrees of separation!
May his soul be at peace

May he rest in peace. He has served us not pefect but well and the world is a better place. Ask those many leaders around the globe who were chastised by him. The cold war is history thanks to his initiatives. He could have done more in many eyes but again as we all seem to agree, he was only human.

It was started before he died, for us to offer prayers. I can see where we can discuss his life without making it a religion thing....

May he rest in peace.

This have been some very sad and hard days for me, I can't belive that he is not among us anymore. I feel really depressed. He was an inspiration to all of us. May he and his work never be forgoten.

I also want to send my prayers to all Catholics out there, to remain strong and keep praying.

/Alexander

Yes, when it became evident he would no longer exist. His public and personal life was religion and his religion was his life. I am merely evaluating someone's life, which tends to occur when that life expires, be it good, and bad. I commend him for his contributory role in toppling Communism in eastern Europe and formally declaring the church's mistake in condemning Galileo for example.

I asked specifically for prayers for the Pope and Roman Catholics in general (since we've lost our 'spiritual' father). Some people have posted honoring a man at the end of his life, as is customary. Trashing a dying or dead man is not in good taste - except on the internet I guess, where no one knows any shame nor respects any boundary.

If you are a believer, then John Paul II is in heaven, don't sweat what others have to say. As any pub/bar owner will tell you, if you talk about religion or politics, you are asking for trouble and there will be no end to it.
If you are like myself and admire Karol Wojtyla for the man he was and what he did, what others say are just criticism of a dead man.
I am for any good man, or woman.
