Science Question

My teacher has me stumped. She asked if Strawberry Jam is a liquid or solid. I have been thinking for a few days now. I am thinking it's a liquid, just very viscous, and has some solids in it (the little things that get stuck in your teeth, not sure what they are called.) I say that because I think if you take a bunch of jam out of a jar, over time it will lose it's shape like a liquid would do (pour water out of a bottle, and it doesn't stay the shape of the bottle.)

What do you guys think?

sounds like a trick question. I would say it was a combination of both

It it will run after it sets out, that means it needs to heat up or gain energy to become a liquid. That to me would be the definition of a solid.

here is a website for you to describe what I am saying better:
http://www.chem4kids.com/files/matter_states.html

Ask your teacher if he knows what a Bose–Einstein condensate is. It is the fifth state of matter.

Hmm..
http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives...7894.Ch.r.html

When you mean sets out, you mean if you leave it say on a plate, and the energy / temperture from the room changes it into a liquid (sticking it to the plate in the morning and changing it's shape from a definite shape to any shape?)

Bose-einstein condenstate. Hm. Bit confused. Is that a mixture of states? The link you gave me kind of confuses me.

Speed, I was thinking a combo of both too. The actual jam part is a liquid, just very thick/viscous, and the little things inside of it (does Strawberry jam have those little things that get stuck in your teeth like in raspberry jam) are solid.

Okay, I'm convinced it's a solid. I took a bottle, tried pouring it, no luck. When I put it in the plate, it's shape is definitie, the same as whatever shape it was when you took it out with a spoon (it does not mould to the spoon if that makes sense like a liquid would either.)

Strawberries are a solid that contains liquid (juice/water) just like humans are solids, but mostly made of liquid. A solid shell with a juicy filling!

If I remember my 7th grade science class right there are 3 states of matter, liquid, solids, and gas. Any form of matter can be any of these states given the right temperature. So couldn't the answer be a question such as, At what temperature? Not sure that is the answer they are expecting but would be hard to argue with lol. I think preserves are the ones that have the seeds and pulp in it. I think jam is the consistent pasty stuff. Not real up to date with my jams and jellies

I see. I think it's simply a solid because of it's shaping though. I don't think it would be strawberry jam anymore if it was say heated into a really gooey liquid, or if it was turned into a gas. Considering we "freeze" strawberry jam, or refrigerate it to, I think it's safe to say that it's a solid. I think that the seeds inside of it also are solid.

I think you have hit upon the right answer/question, "at what temperature?"

A gel is formed when molecules bond with neighbors in long, interlaced chains. The result is a material with a measure of strength and some rigidity, but which is also flexible.

The molecules are not, however, held rigidly next to each other, as in a true solid. if you were to leave a block of jello, for example, sitting on a tabletop for a long time, it would flow under the influence of gravity. Instead of being a solid, jelly or jam should instead be thought of more as very viscous (thick) liquids...

What about the shape thing? A liquid when poured onto the ground ofr example loses the shape of a bottle, it's shape is undefinite. A solid, for example, take your computer case, stays the same, unless you do some sort of state transfusion by melting the steel in your computer case to a liquid or something.

as polonyc2 said, its a gel

it is solid frm out side but between the molecules it contains spaces where lumps of liquid is stored, so when you put it on the ground it has more adhesive force than that of the liquid but less than that of solid

its just like the shower gel or some other gel, when you rub it on your palm it becomes sort of a liquid, when you heat it, it becomes liquid but when you again cool it down it becomes a gel again
