I subscribe to the notion that what can be conceived can be achieved. Imagine how incredible the modern world would look to people from even 100 years ago. Assuming the planet doesn't self destruct, I think the possibilities are endless including breaking the light barrier. Einstein was unquestionably brilliant, but I wonder how many of his theories would change if he had today's data and equipment.

Relativity is actually simple algebra. The problem occurs at the speed of light when you end up dividing by zero. There really is no problem with being faster than light, you just can't go the speed of light to get there. If there was such a thing as instant acceleration, it would work.

Humm, where I can't claim to understand quantum physics, I believe the word "instant" was used in the article hence faster then light. heck if I know, but it is interesting.

The problem is transcending status geometry. FTL speeds are possible by a mechanism capable of generating a distortion in the spacetime such that it is folded, or "warped" or by escaping through higher and lower bands of hyperspace and utilizing theoretical avenues described in String Theory.

Or people could just start wearing more hats.

Errr, excuse me. Warp 1 is the speed of light.

Thank you.

Then what is the speed of plaid? And when one travels at that speed does one rip the fabric of the universe?

Not really, it just boils down to a simple algebraic equation. Getting to that simple equation is a whole other story.

As far as there being 'no problem" with being faster than light - I don't think we really know what means. While I have actually worked out quantum tunneling mathematics (back in my university days) I haven't kept up with current research an don't know what progress has been made understanding what is really going on (visa vi quantuum tunneling).

Oh, and I don't bowl

In a relativistic sense getting to third base before the date began would qualify, I think.
