Re: Well, dang...the cancer's back...

Yesterday was exhausting. My mom picked me up at 5:30am, drove me to Houston and we didn’t get back home until 9:30 last night. I was so tired that I woke up at two am wondering what that glowing thing on my wrist was, only to realize I hadn’t taken off my watch!

Anyway, chemo went well – no problems – and hopefully my next treatment will be here in Austin.

I'll be on chemo through tomorrow around 5pm...

Good to hear you're on track...moving the site of treatment to a more local venue sure sounds like it would be a huge plus...would save the energy expended on travel for more important things...such as kicking this thing in the ****! My family will continue to send our best thoughts and wishes to you and yours. Nice pup btw!

Re: Well, dang...the cancer's back...

I was surprised to find that despite my best efforts to eat my way out of my spiraling weight loss that I'd misplaced another two pounds.
I'm now down to 148 from 170 only two months ago. My goal is to get to 155 and stay there, but that's going to entail getting back on a gym schedule (this is just intolerable for a fitness freak but I'm not strong enough to even consider it yet) and to eat even more.

My thought on that is that besides eating more you should choose what you eat to be as high calorie as possible. Which means high-fat stuff, the kinds of things that in the past, as a fitness conscious person, you probably tended to minimize. Keep in mind that 1 gram of fat is 9 calories, while 1 gram of protein or carbohydrate is just 4 calories.

And gaining 1 pound means taking in 3500 calories more than you expend, over whatever period of time, just as losing 1 pound means taking in 3500 calories less than expended, over whatever period of time.

That's aside from water gain or loss, which will adjust by itself, but which exaggerates measured weight loss. That's because each gram of stored glycogen (the stuff that fuels our muscles, among other things, and which is derived from carbohydrates) is stored with 4 grams of water, so when your muscles are under-fueled due to low caloric intake, there is a considerable amount of temporary water loss as well.

You may already be aware of all of this, as a fitness conscious person, but I thought I'd make sure because I think that these circumstances call for eating differently than what we are taught is good under normal circumstances.

Best,
-- Al

Oh, the sins I now commit in the name of weight gain. Potato chips, Blue Bell Ice Cream shakes, fruit juice sweetened with high fructose corn syrup...all the stuff I wouldn't touch a couple of months ago.
Can't say I'm not enjoying it...

That all depends on the composition of the two lost pounds. I do not claim to have anything but a very passing knowledge of this topic, but many patients in a "wasting" situation generally lost muscle mass first. That is because the raw materials needed for certain types of body repair are in the muscle and not in fat. That is one reason hospitals treat certain types of weight loss so seriously. It is also a problem that initially led Dr. Scott Connelly to develop the meal replacement shake that eventually led to founding MetRx. In other words, it took a very specific type of diet to combat this particular type of weight loss, which also had secondary benefits that could be used by the bodybuilding community. Anyway, if the pounds lost were muscle mass, adding back two pounds of fat would not really help. CJ and his doctor(s) would be better able to determine this.

Re: Well, dang...the cancer's back...

There's a store that carries the MetRX stuff not to far from my house. I think I'll have Mrs. TQ run me over there to find out more on this.

I am glad that this seemed helpful. You may also wish to do a quick Internet search to determine the best products for you, since the people at most stores will be clueless regarding situations like yours. As a first guess (to "hold you over" until you gather more information), the meal replacement packets like this --> Bodybuilding.com - Met-Rx Meal Replacement - Great Tasting And Convenient! On sale now! are a reasonable place to start.
