Re: Well, dang...the cancer's back...

Treatment didn't go well. For the first time ever I had an allergic reaction to one of my drugs - the Docetaxel.
Normally, one is given Benadryl as part of the pre-treatment prep. It's designed to counter the somewhat common reaction to Docetaxel.
When I was first getting this protocol in 2006 after the first treatment I asked to have the Benadry removed because it made me very tired and took a good twenty-four hours for it to clear my system. We removed it from the prep and I never had a single reaction in all those months.
Today was very different...two weeks ago when I had first round the Benadryl was included. Last week I had asked it be removed from the prep. Today, when the Docetaxel hit my system I began to have trouble breathing and stars began to explode in my vision with unknown constellations. I also felt an enormous pressure building in my chest and head. I began to hit the emergency call button and three nurses briskly arrived and began to pump steroids into my system.
I was going allergic anaphylactic shock.
This all took about sixty seconds from the time I noticed something was wrong until the symptoms began to fade.
Dr. Ho (my oncologist) was unavailable, but the attending physician told me that we were going to reschedule my treatment because I needed to let my body rest and recover.
Naturally, I agreed. I feel like a truck has backed over me and I didn't even get chemo. Such a waste of a perfectly good crappy feeling.

Anyway, I'm back in the room and ravenous, which is apparently a side effect of the steroid used to counteract nausea.

Dinner's here. Got to go.

Re: Well, dang...the cancer's back...

Sorry to hear that, TQ. One suggestion that occurs to me would be to ask them if there is a more modern, less fatiguing, anti-allergy drug that they could use in place of Benadryl.

Also, the Wikipedia article on Docetaxel says as follows:
Premedication with corticosteroids is recommended before each administration of docetaxel to reduce fluid retention and hypersensitive reactions.... Pre-treatment with corticosteroids has been used to decrease hypersensitivity reactions and oedema in response to docetaxel and has shown no effect on the pharmacokinetics of docetaxel.
Best,
-- Al

Re: Well, dang...the cancer's back...

That's the plan. One option would be to increase the Dexamethasone (another of my prep drugs) and decrease the amount of Benadryl.

It was kind of odd thinking I could have possibly died today. It was certainly on my mind when I was having the reaction.

Re: Well, dang...the cancer's back...

Shock reactions to chemo have been responsible for deaths. Mrs. TQ was relating a story to me about a co-worker's mom who was on her last treatment, the same protocol she had been on for months. On this one she had an allergic reaction and died. Indeed, the cancer didn't kill her...the treatment did.
These reactions suddenly decide to pop up even if you've never had one. Scary.

Re: Well, dang...the cancer's back...

I know antihistamines kill me too. I can't even take sinus pills, it's like I overdosed on vallium, I get so sleepy, it's INSANE! I can't take them if I have things to do, I'm totally not with it when I do take them. I usually only take things like that if I have a SERIOUS cold, and can't sleep. Not only do I feel half dead, my eyeballs feel like they'd been sandpapered, and I snorted a whole box of baking soda when my nose finally dries out. Usually, the treatment is worse than the sickness with colds for me. I can't imagine the dosage you'd have to take to prevent shock. I'm imagining the above symptoms x 1000, plus the normal chemo reaction. Glad it wasn't worse, and the staff was on top of the situation. Hopefully next time goes better, and you can get this under control.

Re: Well, dang...the cancer's back...

Grouping Hornady's sounds like a nice distraction...

I couldn't sleep well last night due to the day's exhaustion and the drug I took to counter the allergic reaction. I'd love to just get up and head back to town, but even at five in the morning Houston traffic is already beginning to build towards its crush rush crescendo.
Best for me to hang out in the room and roll out around 9:30.

I'll be glad to get home to the wife and kids.
And speaking of kids, we get a new one in just a few weeks. I should post a link to the litter so you guys can see the little devils.
