In the late 1960s a friend of my brother came back from Europe with a 15 year old BMW R25. This was so much different than the Honda, Triumph and BSA bikes that I was familiar with that I was extremely interested. This guy’s brother had purchased an R69 which he brought over soon after. That “extreme interest” turned to love.

I realize we are not supposed to feel such things for inanimate objects, but because the R69 had such lines... such spirit that it seemed very much alive. Smitten, yet penniless, the infatuation lay dormant for 15 years. One fine Sunday while casually looking at the classifieds, I found a 1965 R-50 for sale by a local police sergeant. $1,000 later this bike moved in with me and has returned more fun than anything else I’ve experienced in my adult life.

Mine has a regualr saddle (not the tractor seat shown in the link) and with only 48K miles, she is still in her prime and ready for that long, lonesome highway.
