Night Watch and Day Watch

they are 2 Russian movies (with English subtitles)...the third movie in the trilogy, Twilight Watch is due to be released in 2009

this movie trilogy was heralded as being an 'epic horror trilogy'...based on the book by Sergey Lukyanenko...so many things to say about this move I don't know where to start...first off I think the books might be a better read then the movies...the first movie Night Watch was ridiculously complicated and convulted it was hard to keep track of exactly what the hell was going on...simple enough premise---forces of good and the forces of darkness made a pact centuries ago to keep the peace until the arrival of 'the one' who would choose one side and cause that side to win the war (with the prophecy also stating that 'the one' would side with the Darkness)

but then the movie moved into the present day and so many different story threads and characters were introduced and not explained in a normal way...the overall plot didn't stick to the original premise nor was the whole good vs evil thing explained...why people did certain things made no sense...the pacing of the movie was terrible...

for a movie about vampires and all sorts of evil creatures there was a surprising lack of any real horror or violence...at times the movie feels like a romantic love story or low grade action flick...the CGI was pretty sweet the few times they actually used them

that being said the movie drew me into this world and I actually enjoyed the 2 movies but I wish they had done a better job of explaining what was really going on...Day Watch is a bit better in terms of being able to understand but Night Watch was the better of the 2 movies...makes me want to buy the books and read them as I'm sure they delve deeper into the mythology...the movies had a great premise with the potential to be much better movies

Smokin Aces

I loved it...really good movie...it's about a bunch of hitmen getting ready to whack a mob witness...they along with the FBI, bail bondsmen and a bunch of other characters are trying to be the first to get to this witness

the movie follows each one of them separately and weaves in a bunch of separate storylines which are all connected in the end...very nice!

The Dark Knight

lived up to the hype and then some...what an amazing experience...the movie is really about the rise and fall of Harvey Dent...The Joker is just the catalyst...everything about this movie was amazing---the acting, story, action etc

doesn't even feel like a 'comic book' movie...some people have been comparing this movie to 'Heat' and I can see why...this is more like an epic crime drama...also at over 2.5 hours the movie just flys by...Batman is almost a supporting character...Gordon, Lucius Fox, Alfred, Rachel, Harvey etc all get fairly significant stories and they are all interesting...Heath Ledger owns the role but Aaron Eckhart also deserves props for his protrayal of Harvey "Two Face" Dent (except for the very ending his turn from good guy into villian was very believable)...by the time the end comes everyone is scarred in some way---emotionally, physically...not your typical Hollywood 'happy ending'

I want to see it again...

"you either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villian" - Harvey Dent

DAS BOOT - The Original Uncut Version (5 hours)

That's right: The original uncut five hour version. This is not the three and a half hour Director's Cut movie which was at the theaters and on PBS.

I've seen both and I like this version better. The extra 90 minutes really smooths out the "gaps" which were in the theater version. Things that happen get explained.

Re: What movie did you just see?

The Dark Knight: excellent, though slightly disturbing. As polonyc2 said - it largely transcended the bounds of the typical comic movie.

I am more sad about Heath Ledger's passing after seeing this movie - his performance was outstanding. Hollywood lost a brilliant young actor.
