After SP-3 install;

After an install of SP-3, did anyone notice any differences?
I installed it on a desktop and a notebook and now when I shut either system down it takes a lot longer to shut down. About 45 seconds as opposed to about 15 seconds before.

Thanks,
gtr

Re: After SP-3 install;

I can tell you this much, I had trouble with Service Pack 3.

I ran in to where if I had multiple Windows open, and then went to close them, Windows would freeze up for a bit. Then I had trouble with my mouse every so often would freeze up for a quick bit. Last bit of trouble, is that it would take between 3 and 8 seconds to open a new tab in IE7.

Then after reading the horror stories of what happens, when people uninstall Service Pack 3, and various other incompatibilities with it, I gave up and reinstalled 64bit Vista Ultimate on my machine.

For some reason my system doesn't get along with 32bit XP Pro anymore.

Re: After SP-3 install;

So far it does not seem worth installing it. I see either "I don't notice any difference" or there are some problems. If it ain't broke don't fix it, is how I'm going to approach sp3 right now.

Re: After SP-3 install;

I guess I'm screwed since I already installed it in both my machines, huh?
I thought about using the XP Restore and going back to just before the installation and see what happens...?
The only problem I've had is when I shut my machines off, it just wants to take a long time to shut down.

Re: After SP-3 install;

If it was me I would do the restore just to see if it really is because of sp3.

Re: After SP-3 install;

lol- I've run RC0 & RC1 with no problems , but the release SP hosed my system. Worse yet, it switched the drive letters so I can't just do a restore.

Re: After SP-3 install;

The sp3 betas made a lot of difference in performance. I think ms changed that with the final sp3 because of switching over to vista.

Well, maybe that's what MS wants with SP3... users giving up about XP

Re: After SP-3 install;

SP3 is a rollup of all the fixes and patches since 2001. It has very limited new functionality. Microsoft repeats this over and over and over, yet people seem to expect SP3 to be some magically different thing. It doesn't even come with IE7.

Did you expect it to cure cancer, or summon unicorns or something? The only new stuff it has is NAP and something else totally irrelevant to most people. SP3 is a very convenient thing for new installs, as a person doing a slipstreamed install of XP SP3 today has a lot less downloads to do. That's really all it is. Corporate customers wanted this much more than home users.

Yeah, but as SRTDodge pointed out, the betas were really fast. The release isn't - and seems to have more problems than the RCs I guess MS is serious about getting us to switch

Re: After SP-3 install;

I've been running on XP SP3 RTM (just installed it into my running XP SP2 installation) for a while now and have not seen any problem. The system seems to be a bit snappier than before, that's all.

Yesterday I did a clean reinstall of XP SP3 from a slipstreamed CD and haven't run into any issues either.

Frankly, it is beyond me why XP SP3, basically a rollup of all post-SP2 fixes with marginal functional enhancements, should screw user's machines that badly.

If Microsoft intentionally screwed up XP SP3 to push people on Vista, they'd get slapped pretty bad by corporate customers.
I don't believe in the "intentional screwup" theory.

Re: After SP-3 install;

So far, I've had one serious problem. Computers upgraded to SP3 can sometimes no longer browse peer-peer workgroups, even if the computer is a member. (You no longer have permission ... yadda yadda.) I assume this has something to do with NAP. If someone can help me with this, I'd appreciate it.

Mind you, one can still access specific shared drives, computers, and appliances if you know the netbios name or have mapped the drive. But, attempts to browse the workgroup often fail. This seems somewhat hit-and-miss.

Other than that, the computer I use the most definitely seems to have become randomly a little crash-prone since SP3 was installed. (Nothing major... occasionally trying to run some app will freeze up. Once it was Outlook 2008.)
