| if overclocked go back to default settings? start, run, dxdiag, do all the tests pass? can you successfully run 3dMark without locking up? run memtest86 for a few hours to make sure memory is stable.

There is actually a lot you would have to do for an VIA AGP implementation. One more thing that can help a little. If he has XP SP2 you can change the VIA AGP driver to the Microsoft UAGP driver (http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/archive/uagp.mspx). I never advise anyone to purchase a motherboard with a VIA chipset.
