if overclocked go back to default settings?

start, run, dxdiag, do all the tests pass?

can you successfully run 3dMark without locking up?

run memtest86 for a few hours to make sure memory is stable.

This is the main reason-VIA. You will need to toggle some BIOS settings to get it pseudo-stable but it can still crash. The easiest way to alleviate the problem, without buying new hardware, is set the AGP to 2x mode.

There is actually a lot you would have to do for an VIA AGP implementation. One more thing that can help a little. If he has XP SP2 you can change the VIA AGP driver to the Microsoft UAGP driver (http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/archive/uagp.mspx).

I never advise anyone to purchase a motherboard with a VIA chipset. I have some posts you can look into that have the settings, but nothing guarantees stability with VIA's AGP.

Edit: Fix broken link
