Yes, the one that comes with Vista is quite good.

Re: a free defragmenter???

If you're not running Vista, then try this one from Auslogics...

What prompted me to abandon it some years ago (in favor of Perfect Disk, which is not free but is a good value) was that when defragmenting partitions that contain large video files, it often would spend 20 or 30 minutes or more moving large fragments of these files from one place to another, and then moving them back to where they started, accomplishing nothing.

Also, it does not compress free space very well; it sometimes does not move files as far towards the front (fastest) part of the drive as it should; and it does not organize the files in a way that takes into account when they were last modified, as Perfect Disk does. These factors will result in the partition subsequently re-fragmenting more quickly.

That said, though, for an average user doing routine things such as web-surfing and email, XP's defragmenter is probably good enough.

Regards,
-- Al

Re: a free defragmenter???

I'm using the Vista Defrag utility, on the first defrag, it was slow but since then, it defrags my harddrives fast. I only defrag once a week, because the NTFS only needs to be defragged once a week to once a month, not every day, like a FAT32 formatted system.

Yeah, not sure how long it's been since release, but it's fairly new.

Maximum PC gave it a decent review in a recent issue in which they compared Disk Keeper, Perfect Disk and Auslogic under Vista.
That being said they concluded that none of these defraggers offered any performance gains over Vista's built-in utility. Some slight losses, in fact, in either shut down or boot times...that is to say those times took longer.
I've been using Perfect Disk since the 20th century and always found it to be a good product (I still use it on my XP machine) but the Vista defragger has been working just fine in my game machine.

Agreed been using it for a year now and have to say it's even better than the retail defraggers out there. I have not tried JkDefrag on Vista yet so I'm not sure if it is any better then the built in defragger.
