Home Networking

I purchased a Belkin 5-port 10/100 switch along with two Belkin 10/100 NICs and two patch cables to use for networking two home computers. My new computer is running WinXP while the older one is running Win2K. I have successfully connected the two computers through the switch, but I am unable to establish a successful network connection, even after going through considerable setup on both machines in the networking areas.

Belkin provides a CD with installation software, but it does not work with Win2K (???) according to the documentation.

Can anyone offer some suggestions or ideas?

Ok here's a bunch of questions that'll help us figure out what is going on.

1. When you say successful connection, do you mean to the switch or can you see both machines in network places? Do you have link lights on both the nics and the hub?

2. What protocol are you using? Have you assigned IP address to each machine if you are using TCP/IP?

3. Are you on the same workgroup on each pc?

4. Have you shared any folders on either machine?

If possible, can you list what you have done so far(in order) to make this work? This is pretty simple to do so once we figure out where you are we can go from there.

Have you assigned an IP/subnet to the two pc's. Are the drivers for the network cards working? (Try reinstalling the drivers). The OS should not have anything to do with it. I've successfully networked 2k and xp many times without a hitch.

I'd approach it like this:
On the switch, are the links active? yes/no
If no, hardware issues. - Re-seat cards.

If yes, software issues

Software issues:
NIC drivers ok? try reinstall if not.
TCP/IP settings OK? Make sure same subnet!!!
(i.e. 192.168.0.XXX)
Workgroup/Domain [but not for your situation] settings the same?

If there is a broadband connection involved, there could be some additional configuration issues, but nothing too significant.

Good luck!

Thanks for the responses guys...

I can gladly report that I made some significant progress last night with my little home networking project.

I added the NetBEUI protocol on the Win2K computer, and ensured that I had IP addresses under TCP/IP on both machines. I am using 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2. I also disabled my firewall software (Norton Internet Security). I can now see the WinXP shares from the Win2K computer (but the Win2K machine itself doesn't show up under Network Browser). From the WinXP machine I can see the Win2K shares as long as I am logged in under Administrator. But when I log in under my own name, I can only see my own shares. What's odd is that I am set up as a member of the Adminstrators group.

I'm close, but I still have some tweaking to do to get things completed.

You don't need net/beui. Just the TCP/IP is all that's needed. They need to be on the same group (workgroup). And you may need to create a 'new' share in Win2K. Even though there is one called something$, make a new one and give it a new name. Let anyone access that share. ..

I assume the your account has a password? As default XP won't allow fileshare access without account passwords.

In Norton firewall you can set a trusted zone for the local network using the wizard.
