Question How to release a file association

I accidentally registered the .001 file extension to a program, but since I open different packed files with different programs, I want the .001 extension not to be registered to anything (so it asks me what program I want to use when I double click it) I forget how to blow away the association (playing around with File Types can have potentially disasterous results) Thanks!

Just go into File Explorer and go to folder options. You will find the tab that has file associations. Find the one you want to delete (.001) and you should be able to delete it. There is a delete button in the dialog to delete any file associations.

to open a file with multiple applications, I right click on it - Open With, Choose Program...

choose the program you want but don't check the little box. The next time you right click on the file, the program should be in the Open With list...

I use this for photos. right click on a .jpg file and I can choose from:

IE
Adobe Photoshop
Paint
Windows picture viewer
