| modem =reboot=#$%%%@@!!!! I have an annoying problem on my new computer.I have an ECS P4M800PRO-M ,Pentium D 925, 1gb ram, 80gb WDC primary ide,DVD-RW & CD_RW on secondary Ide,WDC 160gb sata {on ide in bios},Diamond ATI AGP. I installed XP pro sp2 on the sata and everthing worked great for a few weeks until I tried to install a modem. The first modem was a usb 56k , installed good, could query modem, but when I tried to connect {actually press the connect button} my computer would simply reboot! OK, I then tried a pci internal 56k, as xp loaded {right after welcome screen} my computer would reboot{as long as modem in slot}OK I thought maybe an issue with sata. Wiped xp, loaded xp on primary ide, installed pci modem, query good, connect ok,new driver from win update. End of problem? Not quite, every now and then {every ten times or so} hit connect button and computer reboots. I`ve reinstalled modem 4 times and same thing.I believe it has something to do with the via chipset{not sure} Never had this problem before and I`ve changed all the settings I could find{xp & bios} While this problem is not major it bugs me{I like things to work properly} Reading other post here I noticed other people had modem problems with the via chipset{they all believed it to be software} Anyways I would like some input as to what this problem could be???? |

| Re: modem =reboot=#$%%%@@!!!! I would remove driver from win update. And try just the driver from modem website.

| I have kind of a dumb question, do new computers need to be " broke in"? The reason I ask is this, since my computer has been running{2 weeks} with the quick post on from the bios it has taken 15 to 20 seconds to load to the xp screen. Then there was the modem problem from the original post above. Well, last night I downloaded speedfan just to keep an eye on the temps and ran a program to keep my cpu at about 50% and the temp of my cpu went from 41 C to 61 C. After an hour the temp dropped to 58 C with the system board now showing 38 C from a start of 29 C.. Today I ran the exact same thing and now the cpu never went above 54C with the system board at 28C. Now it takes 1 or 2 seconds to load to the xp screen and I have connected with the modem 40 or more times with no problems at all. I noticed the long post because I have old 233`s that loaded faster. This is my first build with new parts and I wonder is this the norm or did I just have a chip that needed to get warm to work proper? Perhaps I should move my questions to a different forum as my problem seems hardware instead of Xp related. Last edited by Thirteen : 05-06-2008 at 08:52 PM. Reason: Wrong forum perhaps?? |
