| Stupid Question about reinstall/reformat of Win XP Pro I built a system about 2 years ago and am using an ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe mobo/P4 3 Ghz CPU/ and a 37 Gig WD Raptor SATA drive as my OS (C) drive. I have two other hard drives installed on other SATA and IDE channels. (see signature) It has been awhile since I did a reinstall and reformat. Time to clean the pipes. I seem to forget the basic steps here and if there is anything in particular I need to do regarding the SATA drive I am using for the OS and programs. Can I just throw in the Win XP Pro CD and reformat the C drive as part of the install process? Thanks.

| I would unplug all the other drives until you get the OS installed on the SATA. With your motherboard I think you should be ok. You'll know it works if you can see the drive to format it during the install. otherwise you'll need the SATA driver on a floppy and press F6 when asked for SCSI/RAID drivers at the beginning of the install.

| Thanks. When I did the initial install of the OS, I did have to install some drivers for the Raptor I believe. I did a reinstall/reformat about 15 months ago, but can't recall if I had to do so again. I seem to recall I did not. Will see what happens. Time to backup my stuff. ![]()

| The drivers you recall installing for your Raptor, weren't directly for your Raptor. They were for the onboard SATA controller built into the Intel chipset. You can navigate to the ASUS website and download the latest copy of the SATA drivers for your ICH5R. You will be asked to create a floppy disk. When you are reinstalling the OS, you will see an option very quickly about pushing F6. Push it, provide the floppy after and select the driver for your SATA controller.

| While your at the Asus site, might as well download the latest chipset drivers for your mobo as well.

| All went well. I ended up not having to install any files for the SATA Raptor boot drive. Did have to play around with boot sequnece a couple times. I just found the drive upon the install process and it let me reformat and then reinstall. Thnaks guys!

| as long as you're not using RAID then you don't need to do the F6 SATA driver install...the XP Service Pack 2 CD comes with the necessary SATA drivers

| I wasn't sure what I would need to do. It had been awhile. The version of WIN XP Pro I installed was not SP2. I then installed SP2 after I installed the WIN XP Pro original. Since I reformatted the hard drive, it must have had some basic install files that let it "see" the SATA drive right away to install the OS on it. I seem to recall needing to do something unique when I did the initial build of the machine in December 2003. It may have had to do with getting the BIOS to recognize all of the drives in order correctly. No, I did not do any RAID setup. I did a reformat in November of 2004. I think maybe that went pretty easy. I was overdue for another reinstall.
