Re: Weirdest problem I've ever had....need help!

1) When taskman is open, is there any one task consuming cycles,
Anything look out of the ordinary.... high i/o?

2) just an aside...
Once I heard of a nasty trick where someone would take an image of the
desktop and then display it as wallpaper on the desktop...
the user would click on the icons and start button, but nothing would
happen, because this was just an image displayed on the desktop...

Could something like this be at play here?

Re: Weirdest problem I've ever had....need help!

I had a very similar problem. When I installed DVD Fab, it installed a special driver or DLL (I think it was a DVD burning or Video decoder DLL or something), and it was blocking most Mouse and keyboard input. I updated DVD Fab and now it works fine. (I have spybot and McAfee, so I dont think it was a virus)

So what you need to is run msconfig, and block half of the Programs that load up, then reboot. If it still does it, unblock those Programs and Block the other half, reboot, block a quarter, reboot, etc.. Also do the same for the non-Microsoft Services.

Drivers can cause strange problems as well. If you installed a new printer recently, its software/drivers may be playing up. HP drivers/software seem to be a bit troublesome from my experience. Also Logitech mouse drivers can cause issues, especially on Laptops that have built in Touchpads with their own drivers, the Logitech drivers conflict with the existing touchpad driver.

Also run SFC /SCANNOW in a command prompt to check the system files. And run CHKDSK C: /F in a command prompt to fix any file system errors. If the file system is corrupted, binary data addressing can get mixed up and cause BSOD's and other issues.

I tried the msconfig thing, still had the problem so I ran a diagnostic startup, with nothing starting with the computer except the essentials. Then I ran the SFC /SCANNOW at the cmd, it kept prompting me for the xp cd, which I put in, and it still kept prompting me for, so I had to keep clicking 'retry' during the whole lengthy process. Then I ran chkdsk c: /f, and after reboot got the BSOD twice, so I hit F8 during reboot and chose 'use last good known configuration', then it booted to windows, but I still have that same annoying problem. Nothing has helped!
On a side note, my anti-virus is CA anti virus. Maybe it's not finding a virus that may be causing my trouble?

Fixed it, Finally!

I fixed it (so far) by uninstalling my anti-virus software. I usually use AVG free, but for a little while now I've been using CA anti-virus. I thought maybe I would uninstall it first to see if that was the cause of my troubles, and so far I'm back to normal.
