I can't get passed the scanning for critical updates... it just sits there at 0%

Hi I also complained about the Windows update site.
So I fired an email to Microsoft, this is their reply;

Hello Danny,

Thank you for contacting Windows Update Site.

The Windows Update Site was recently refreshed. Due to the site changes, we currently have a large back log of customers requesting assistance. Because of these upcoming web site modifications, we recommend that you try an alternate locations for you to obtain updates for your computer. This will allow the changes to take place and possibly correct the issue that you are experiencing.

The Windows Update Corporate Web has retired. To find updates for Windows XP and Windows 2000, go to the Windows Update Catalog at:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp

Please be advised that you should be running Windows XP or Windows 2000 to access the new Windows Update site. This site will support Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me) and Windows 98 in the future.

To search for updates for Internet Explorer, go to: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...s/default.asp.

Also, Microsoft offers several no-charge online support services that may assist you including:

- The Knowledge Base, which includes thousands of technical articles on Microsoft products:

On a continuation to my other post (see above), does this mean Windows Update will never work? Using the Windows Update Catalog is awful. From time to time I still receive automated updates, but I still prefer to be able to go to the Windows Update site.

Similarly I am having difficulties accessing Hotmail site and getting updates from the Office Update site. Any one else experiencing these problems as well?

Funny,
But my Update ran full speed!!!

My OS was recently reinstalled with Service Pack 1.

The reason I had to reinstall my OS is because last week I got the "Open New Window IE Stall Bug" And the Knowledge base at M.S. had several things to try to repair it. Including reinstalling XP SP1. However their last suggestion was a "Clean Install of the Operating System"

Funny how some people around here think reinstalling the OS is not necessary when you have problems. But Microsoft has it Listed for this particular bug.

This bug will cause any Windows Update downloads to fail, as the download file is a window directed to a new website.

MS supposedly fixed this bug in IE 6.1 SP1, but they still say it can happen.

Here is a list of what was fixed in IE 6.1 SP1
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;326489

Here is the "Open New Window Is Blank" Message base Article
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;281679

And here is a Quote that tells you to reinstall your Operating system, directly from Microsoft.....

"If this does not resolve the problem, reinstall Internet Explorer. If you are using the version of Internet Explorer that is included with your operating system, reinstall or repair your operating system."

I had this problem with IE6 under XP Pro and IE 6.1 SP1 under XP SP1.. I believe the problem is caused when you get stuck in a forcefull pop up scenario where so many adds are popping up and new pages are popping up from Web sites that are a "Questionable" source of Internet Information. I have been unable to determine the exact cause of this Blank New Window error, but it does appear to begin after you visit a site that initiates a flood of new windows being opened on "Close" "Open" and "Click" window actions.

A simple reboot does not correct this problem once your IE6 and IE6.1 has been affected.

Dave,

Actually this problem occurred from a clean installation. I recently purchased some new hard drives and had to install Win XP. It was only then that I encountered this problem. My old system did not have this problem.

I have re-formatted and re-installed XP at least 2 or 3 times last week, and each time I have the same result. I was able to get SP1 from the Windows Update Catalog, but not from the Windows Update.
