Windows Update Killed Internet Connection

I installed today's critical updates (3) on 2 of my PCs and it killed the internet connection on both. I did a restore and that fixed it. So, I tried installing them individually to figure which one was the offending update.

It is KB951748

Beware.

p.s. Both PCs are running XP SP3.

Thanks for letting us know. I'm not surprised. I usually do Windows security patches fairly promptly, after reading the kb writeup on them, but I had already decided to wait on this one after following the link for its "known issues." It was hard to make much sense of it, and it didn't particularly seem to apply to XP client machines, but it was enough to scare me off for the time being:

do you happen to be using ZoneAlarm?...I've read that the new update is causing the dead connection for ZoneAlarm users

I wonder if this update causes issues for non ZA users as well...I'm using Vista 64 on my main rig but I have XP SP3 installed on a separate hard drive and havn't installed this months' update yet on it

Yes, ZA Free on both PCs. I wonder if a re-install of ZA after the update will fix it...

I had ZoneAlarm free and the dead connection after today's MS Updates.
I uninstalled ZoneAlarm and installed Comodo Firewall Pro (free).
Back in the saddle again.

Update: They've begun releasing new versions of the ZA productsin response to this problem:
ZoneAlarm SmartDefense Research Center
No new free version yet...

Bingo! I have experienced the same problem. Installed the updates and today, I was unable to access the internet. After hours on the phone with my internet provider, thought maybe my cable modem was dead. Then, I disabled ZA and instant access to the net. Glad to know I am not the only one with this problem. Please give me an update when you find something out. Thanks.

Strange, I haven't experienced any problems with internet access and I have ZA security set to "High" which is the level that was causing problems...

This also happened to me. I downloaded the 3 Microsoft updates and installed them. Next day I went to use my pc and Firefox wouldn't appear - there was no tab on the Start/Taskbar and no window on desktop, however Taskmanager states that Firefox was running. I tried IE, Opera, and SeaMonkey - they popped up - but no internet connection. I did a system restore and that solved the problem. I just read the news that the one update is responsible for the problem - if your running ZoneAlarm (which I am) but they state you don't get internet connection if it's set to high (mine is set to medium and I still got no internet connection). I'm now getting the microsoft updates again (everytime I kill it using Taskmanager, it keeps coming back). After reading the article, I unchecked the one update that was causing the problem and installed the other 2 updates. I haven't rebooted the pc yet.

Update: I just installed the new version of ZA Free and then KB951748. It works.
