| hello again, it seems that me and windows do not get along very at all. i have not rebooted my PC in a few days and after i installed a new audio driver i went to reboot and XP just stops at the "Windows is Shutting Down" Screen. So i smacked the power button and restarted. NO Chkdsk, nothing saying windows was not properly shutdown nothin. it booted fine. I uninstalled the new driver and rebooted , same thing happened. just hangs and hangs. i trolled the net and found some articles relating to this issue but none really fit my problem. i tried updating , recovery console , loaded a backup image which i would think would've worked fine since it was from 2 weeks ago when things were ship shape. No Viruses and no spyware was found so im a bit lost. any ideas? hardware issue maybe ? OS - XP Pro SP3 pc specs in my profile |

| Re: XP Hangs during shutdown issue Based on the fact that you restored to an image prior to the issue and still have the problem, I would say it points to a hardware problem. Try disabling all the onboard hardware in BIOS. If that solves the problem, try enabling them one at a time to determine which is the culprit. Good luck.

| Re: XP Hangs during shutdown issue Didn't you change anything in the XP (or bios) power management profile. Reset the default bios config and check again. |

Since the problem happened after an audio driver install, it seems likely that the the PCI audio card mentioned in the user profile is the culprit. Audio cards seem to be one of the major causes of shutdown hang-ups, also. Some setting in the card's firmware may have been changed with the driver install. Or, it may have changed the motherboard bios. I suggest removing the audio card and see if the problem goes away. This will at least narrow it down to (or eliminate) the audio card's firmware. Quote:
The D975XBX2 supposedly has on-board audio options (8 channel or 6 channel) that might have gotten enabled causing a conflict with the card. You might also check the bios for that before doing a full reset. Last edited by Terry Reynolds : 09-17-2008 at 07:19 AM. | ||

| Re: XP Hangs during shutdown issue You have an image of the system. Try a fresh install of the OS, before installing any drivers or patches see if you still have the issue. As you install drivers, even if they don't need a reboot, reboot the system. That will single it out for you.

| Re: XP Hangs during shutdown issue no im not overclocking. the only thing i changed was the ram timings. But i have ruled that out. Im gonna give gorganzola's suggestion a shot. although i really do not wanna start fresh yet again. seems as if there is an audio driver thats messing stuff up but i cant find which one it is. so a clean install it is and i'll go from there. Thanks for the help guys, appreciate it. |
