How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 2 from your computer

OVER THE TOP: FAQ
  • all and any MS service packs include all the older updates. Yes, SP2 includes all the updates from SP1(a)
  • any flavor of xp can be slipstreamed with sp2. Yes, original as well as slipstreamed with sp1 or sp1a, home or professional.
  • result shall be the same - a cd with no MS Virtual Machine. Yes, SP2 removes MS Virtual Machine.
  • SP2 also removes words "Professional/Home" from the splash-screen at bootup. Yes, it means u will see only words "Windows XP" for both.
  • To sum this up, should I get SP2? - if u r not sure after reading the thread - no, don't get it. Wait until some of the vulnerabilities fixed by sp2 shall be exploited and your computer gets cracked. Then lose all the data, reformat and reinstall. Then get it.

Thanks for providing many links, TweakHound and wayne

I will have to figure something out. I have the firewall feature disabled and now, every ten seconds, it pops up from the task tray telling me to enable firewall protection. It must be designed to drive the user nuts until he or she enables the feature.

Yes SZ... most stick worthy

Just one question re Mazzy's link... it says "DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER: A smaller, more appropriate download will be available soon on Windows Update."

Will this Network installation package work for individual PC's? It doesn't matter to me if the download is larger! Has anyone used it on standalone PC's OK or does it get confused or something?

It should work fine on one PC.

They usually recommend that you do not download this for only one PC so that it will only download the required updates.

I would recommend download the whole thing so that you can easily install SP2 anytime you reinstall a machine without having to download it again.
