Colin McRae DIRT anyone?

Hi there.

I bought this game 2 days ago and i have to tell you that i'm really amazed.
Imho (i've only played it with the keyboard yet) it's that best ralley simulation i've ever played.
Cool little feature is, that you can watch the video of your run backwards.(funny when you see a car, heavily damaged, popping out of nowhere, colliding with a big rock when suddenly its doors reappear, windows get unbroken. all that with some strange music in the backgound)

Greetings

Dru

Whoah!

I've played DIRT with the G25 Force Feedback wheel and it's awesome.
Great Fun.

And the cars you can choose to drive, brilliant. I've already tried some chevrolet pickup truck, with an enormous engine, big wheels, some mitsubishi, also pickup, also big wheels and engine.
Great fun to ride them, thanks to Force Feeback.

Greetings

Dru

I'm still trying to get used to playing DIRT with the G25 wheel. My attempt to play the game with 900° steering enabled failed (the best view, imho, to drive in ralley mode is the cockpit or better driver view. you can see the steering wheel, your wheel has 900° but the wheel on the screen only turns 180°, that's kinda disturbing for me).
In another mode i like the hud view (camera position is in the middle of the hud), have to try that with 900°.

The game is somewhat hardware demanding. There are some things that may prevent you from experiencing the fluent graphics you may be used from playing Colin McRae 2001, or Colin McRae 2005 with the rig you have now.
In mine the missing PCI-E slots (agp 8X for the ATi X1950XT 256MB card, everything else on PCI), hdds and dvd-drives on PATA and DDR RAM force me to accept DIRT's suggested settings for detaillevels etc. at 1280x1024 resolution. But with this settings i have about 30 fps average, topping 50 fps sometimes, going as low as 24 fps so far and the graphics are really great.

Greetings

Dru

P.S.: Sound is perfect (as it already was with 2005). In cockpit view you hear exactly where something is happening around you, and i have only played it in stereo so far. I'm excited how it may sound once i have my logitech 5.1 speaker system (that with wireless rear speakers).

I think this game looks fantastic, with top notch lighting effects and the damage modelling looks brilliant.

From what I've heard you need a controller or gamepad to play it properly, how do you find the keyboard controls?

I know its supposed to be much more true to life, but how does it compare with Trackmania's laws of physics defying loops, jumps and twists for fun factor?

Hi zapionics<alt>!

Grphics are brilliant for sure (even at medium detail levels).

You can play it with keyboard, but it is kinda terrible for me. You have very accurate and "real-life-like"-physics, so just imagine driving your car with only two position (full or nothing) for the throttle.

A controller or pad would be better, using a wheel would be best (escpecially one with Force Feedback).

You can disable damage and i think that there are several levels of "physics reality" to choose. May have a look at it this evening.

Greetings

Dru

Thumbs up

I played through the demo at ultra settings (@ 1024 x 768) on my AGP 7950 GT and it was quite smooth. I am using the Logitech Momo Racing wheel and pedals. I may purchase the full game after I completely finish Need for Speed: Most Wanted and don't have to worry about changing my driving technique for DiRT.

The driving model is slightly more simulated (It took some time to get used to) then I like but the graphics and just plain fun of off-roading definitely make up for it.

I get the ERROR:
"Your graphic card does not support shader version 3.0"

How bogus.

Too bad, the X800XL seems to be to "old" to play D.I.R.T. with it.

Greetings

yes, but it only has Pixel/Vertex Shader Version 2.

Here are the specs of the X1950XT compared to the X800XL card.

D.I.R.T. seems to be needing Version 3 so you are out of luck with your card here.

Greetings

I'm sorry but i can't start Dirt at the moment. The graphics after the intro video are awfully corrupted. Can't even start it in safemode.

I think i have to reinstall it.

Greetings

Dru

P.S.: Is there i manual you could have a look at? I have to admit i haven't bothered looking for one. But i can have a look now.

P.P.S.: Augh! I've found the "manual". There's a lot of information in it, but there is no description of the most important and common menu settings and options anywhere.

Suddenly my installation of DIRT seems to be faulty, screen is all messed up once coming to the menu. Even default startup didn't work.
So i played around with Colin McRae 2005 a little bit.
Now, with the new rig, i can play this game smoothly at 1280x1024, everything set at maximum, FSAnything etc. etc. It's graphics are astonishing and the sound is excellent too (i still prefer the cool music in DIRT). You are tempted to willingly crash your car to see all the things you are able to see.

Will have to uninstall DIRT and try with a new installation.

Greetings

Dru
