Deus Ex 3 - confirmed

Hmmm...from Wikipedia, of all places:

"It was announced on May 17, 2007 by IGN in an interview with Patrick Melchior, the director of Eidos France, on the French-Canadian television station, MusiquePlus. Neither Warren Spector nor Harvey Smith, who were the main creative directors behind the first two games, are attached to the project.
Further confirming the game's development, Eidos Montreal's general manager Stéphane D’Astous reported that they have received a "huge mandate" to focus on the creation of Deus Ex 3. In the same report, D’Astous expounded upon the development philosophy being implementented at the new studio. The philosophy focuses on smaller teams with multi-discipline employees. While embraced by the designers, this philosophy means that Deus Ex 3 is scheduled to develop for at least 18 months, if not 24 or more, which puts the earliest release date in the middle of 2009. The last bit of information D'Astous divulged was that Deus Ex 3 had just passed proof of concept, as of late November 2007."

Considering Spector's Deus Ex track record is 1 for 2 I'm willing to give this non-Spector version some due diligence.

Deus Ex 1 ranks among my all time favorites....

Deus Ex 2 was.....barely so-so

let's hope Deus Ex 3 turns out better than Soldier of Fortune 3.....

Jeez, guys...SoF was never in the same league as Deus Ex. An apples to oranges comparison if I've ever heard one.
I'd rather compare Deus Ex 3 to 1 and 2.

Now we could start a thread that compares sequels in general...

I'd hope Deus Ex 3 would be better than 2. It would have to suck pretty hard not to be. Here's hoping they don't use that crappy Unreal-whatever-version-engine again.
BioShock blew hard enough as it was.
Personally, I think it would rock it they chose the latest Crytek engine...but I don't know how that would work in an RPG/FPS application.
Or Source. That would make me happy, too.

If it is like 2, I won't buy it. Deus Ex is my favorite game of all time. Deus Ex 2 was one of the worst games I ever played. So I have little hope for 3.

They need to bring back JC Denton, Paul Denton, Gunther, Eva and the rest for me to buy this game. If they can do that, I will buy it!

I'm hopeful that the Eidos development team will understand how badly "2" blew and how legendary "1" is.
I think much of why "2" was so bad was the choice of the Unreal 2 engine and it's "maps gotta be small" limitation. Oddly, the first Unreal engine (on which Deus Ex 1 was based) had large, sprawling maps. BioShock continues that "small map" syndrome and that's why I hope-hope-hope Eidos doesn't choose Unreal again. BioShock's developers have learned to cleverly mask that map-space limitation but it was still there. No wide-open spaces when you're deep in the drink.
Another problem I had with BioShock was the face animations of the NPC's was downright primitive compared to Source. Nuance would be what Deus Ex is all about and Crytek or Source would work well there.
Also...I'd hope Eidos would remember that replayability would hinge greatly on heavy RPG elements, ala Deus Ex 1.
We'll just have to wait and see.

I agree with all you wrote TQ. I would specify that one RPG element was the interface, which in Deus Ex was full featured even for a PC game. The interface in Deus Ex 2 was CONSOLE need I say more? If they develop this game primarily for console and add PC compatability like they did in Deus Ex 2, then for my money, they shouldn't even bother because the game will bomb. They need to develop the game for PC and add console compatability, like they did with Deus Ex 1. In Deus Ex 2, the interface was simultaneously simplistic and incomprehensible, a feat to be sure but not one to be proud of.

Also, they need complete, interesting characters, like JC Denton, his brother Paul, etc. And a world comprehensible and which reflects the imaginitive use of current day corporate and political structure with creative concepts such as adding the illuminati element. In other words, they need IDEAS, and some semblance of the intellectual to carry this off in a manner worthy of Deus Ex 1.

Yep...a true RPG inventory interface is key. Oblivion did it for both the PC and XBox, so it can be done.

It was a very bad decision to relegate JC to outsider status in Deus Ex 2. I can only speculate that it was designed to facilitate the console 'tards introduction to the world of Deus Ex, but the idea - like the rest of the game - was a miserable failure.

Deux Ex 2 was also very very buggy when it was first released (subsequent patches fixed most of the issues), but that also contributed to the negative feedback for the game...after finally getting around to playing the game I found it to be entertaining...not anywhere close to the quality of Deus Ex 1 but I still enjoyed the game...I think sometimes people fall into the hysterical mob syndrome and don't give things a chance to suceed...Deus Ex 2 was indeed geared towards the console masses but was not as terrible of a game as most people would lead you to believe

oh...and just how many of the people in this thread that hated the game so much actually finished the game?

I finished it. And I hated it. And have never cared to play it again. In fact I gave the game away although the person I gave it to liked it. If you like console games, then fine. The game was to me terrible in every respect. Even the graphics I found to be utterly poor. Everything was so grey and colorless.
