Re: FPS gaming, story or killin?

I personally care more about the frag fest!. I like combat to be cut up with a few puzzles like with HL2 and a little story line, but most of them are pretty pretentious so I pay more attention to combat physics etc.

Re: FPS gaming, story or killin?

For me, the story always comes first. Fragfests are a dime a dozen--Painkiller, Serious Sam, etc. don't even pretend to have a plot or storyline, and Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 were only a notch above. You are just there to "clean up" the lower level bad guys and take out their leader at the end. One of the reasons Half-Life (1) was such a breakthrough was that it actually had a story, which was basically "escape" (by crawling through ventilation systems, etc.), "survival" as the enemy tried to eliminate you to remove evidence (the "Marines") or kill you because you were a natural enemy (the inhabitants from Zen), and saving the universe (by shutting down the connection between our planet and Zen). Actually, a lack of meaningful storyline is one of the reasons that I have turned to RPGs in the last couple years.

Re: FPS gaming, story or killin?

Half-Life had the right balance, more so than HL2.
