GOG.com - Good Old Games

Great News. CD Projeckt, the people who made The Witcher, are starting a website in September where you can download classic games for $5.99 to $9.99.

DRM Free!!!

XP and Vista Compatibility guaranteed.

GOG.com Teaser

The big one seems to be Fallout 2, but the initial list looks pretty good.

Here is an interview discussing it:

Gamasutra - Interview: CD-Projekt A-'GOG' About Classic PC Game Download Site

I like the theory behind no DRM. Basically, he says why treat paying customers like criminals -- and reading between the lines -- when pirates get these games for free. The publishers can at least make some profit off of these games that are beyond normal lifespan.

I wish they would add System Shock 2 to the list...I would love to play that game...that is the one game I've always wanted to play but couldn't due to issues between the game and XP/Vista...I almost bought the game a few months back from Ebay but decided against it after reading about the possible incompatibilities/workarounds etc

I play System Shock 2 once or twice a year (Love this game!) and don't have any problems. The only thing I have to do is "turn off" one of the CPU cores when playing it. Still to this day it is one of my all time greatest games!

no registry hacks, config file changes, or other crazy workarounds needed?...I did a search on System Shock 2 and XP a few months back and found a lot of sites with a long list of system changes that had to be made which might or might not work so that scared me away...I have 2 systems in my house, one with XP and one with Vista 64 bit (my main machine)...I would love to be able to play it on my Vista machine

Re: GOG.com - Good Old Games

GB: At the moment, there are only a handful of games depicted on the GOG website. Are you able to give us at least a partial list of games that you already know will be available at launch?

Tom: I'll mention some of my favorites that aren't on the teaser site... Jagged Alliance 2, MDK 2, Redneck Rampage, Kingpin, Lionheart, Descent 1-3, Shogo... ah the list goes on and on.

Site Features @ GameBanshee
If the list goes on, I wish they would just list it!

I play it on XP all the time. I just have to disable one of my CPU cores as the Dark Engine doesn't like it. I also use the Hi-res pack to improve some of the models and the patch that lessens weapon degradation and monster respawn. Doesn't need much else as I think it is just about damn perfect to begin with.

A great idea, especially with Vista compatibility guaranteed. As soon as it's available I'll sign up.

Excellent find, WhiteEclipse, thank you.

Re: GOG.com - Good Old Games

I love the idea behind GoG.com! I hope publishers of older games get behind this concept. Wouldn't it be great if they could extend their inventory to even older classics like System Shock, TIE Fighter, Ultimas, Daggerfall, etc.!! Even though DosBox does a great job, it would be wonderful to have a convienient one-click install & wrapper for all the games to work on Vista & XP.

Reading their website really makes me feel they "get it" when they talk about the classic computer games that I still fire up to this day !
