Picked up the game a couple days ago and WOW by far the most beautiful game ive played. This is my first RPG and i should say i love it. It has so much more to offer then just shooting your way around. It’s a good practice for me too, see if im patient enough to learn it all.
I have not experienced any problems so far. But does it stress my system to the max. The temps are sometimes so high that I just pause it and grab myself a drink or make a smoke. Did not have any issues with my over clocked system but I think I have to trade in my 7800gt to a faster one, in a way absurd hahah I just bought this video card 3 months ago. I can hear the reaction from my wife already when I mention this,,hahah well might have to do some magic money stuff to get myself a new one. I love the story line and the voice over from the characters this makes it so realistic. Won’t probably to long anymore when we really plug ourself in and escape this reality and trade it in for a silicon one, whatever makes you happy I guess. Well have fun and don’t forget to blink

LOL.... Just a couple of hours ago when I was driving to the shop to pick up my great 2405FPW I saw some flowers at the side of the road...

The only thing that was going through my mind...

"Harvested some dandelion"..... "Harvested some dandelion"...

Need to make a potion......!!!!

Yestarday I was watching some NPC's carry on a conversation in front of a couple of houses.
The sun came out from behind a cloud and their shadows appeared briefly, then disappeared as the sun became again obscured.

Very, very cool, that.

That does sound great. Talking about NPC's. I was amazed at the amount of conversations going on between NPC's.. Adds some great realism to the game...

I thought I'd try some of the INI file tweaks he's listed as they sounded interesting. Strangely some of the properties he describes are not in my INI file? For example the allow console property is not there, although I can access the console anyway. Several othe properties were also missing.

Anyone had a look at this guide and their INI file? Did you also find this to be the case?

I decided to not pursue the .ini tweaks so I can't comment one way or the other.
The outdoor texture packs sounded interesting (and they are) but I'm not going to dink around with the .ini file. I saw no benefit to making any changes.

The author of the guide has listed a couple of interesting settings for multi-threading and video improvements. Maybe I should just add them if they're not there? I'll try and find out.

Has anyone took a look at their task manager while the game is minimized? I have and the game hardly uses any CPU time. It seems to take about 600MB of memory, but very little CPU time. Does anyone find that odd?

Is this game solely dependent on system memory and graphics power, or am I just looking with it minimized?

I think thats pretty odd, but maybe its because its minimized, maybe it goes into pause or something. The other really odd thing I found was that if you switch to wire frame view (TWF) it consumes more CPU than when the textures are loaded. I expected it would just stay the same.

A lot of games don't consume CPU cycles when minimized so that is pretty normal.

Use the windows performance monitor to monitor CPU usage while using the game...

Why not? Apparently there is a lot to gain (performance wise).

FWIW, I did tweak my INI file with the suggested settings and the game does feel a lot smoother... Still some tweaking needed BTW because I still get brief stuttering from time to time.

Haven't really played yesterday since I was setting up my Dell 24" 2405FPW!!

I believe my game is running as smoothly as I can reasonably expect given the hardware with which it has to work.
I get game stutter only once in a while and not enough to distract me from enjoying my playtime.
I am more concerned with the possibility of reducing visual quality with these suggested settings than I am with increasing framerates.
The multi-threaded tweaks just strike me as iffy at best and like I said I'm not experiencing enough stutter for it to be a bother.
Considering I'm on a AGP machine -although with a modern video card and 2GB of RAM - and at 1280x1024 Oblivion is running great.

SubZero, when you were following the guide and changing the settings did you find any of them missing from your INI file? I found several missing from mine.

Hehehe..... yeah... It seems I'm on a spending spree. First my X51V + GPS and now this brilliant monitor.

BTW, ZAP, I also found several missing, I think mainly the dual core optimizations.

After implementing most of the optimizatons it seems Oblivion no longer crashes on exit. I do still notice some stuttering but I'm not finished tweaking. Besides I'm running at a higher (1920x1200!!!!) resolution right now so that may be debit to some of that too!!

Yes, pretty strange because his guide is so detailed. Maybe different version?

Also I tried the LOD mods and cant get them to work they're not listed in the "data files" menu and they dont seem to load. This is really annoying as ppl are raving about them. I dont even so how they can work without an .esm file.
You get these mods to work?
