HellsGate London----Shooter???

I got HellsGate London for Xmas...

I'm a "shooter" guy...

I love FPSs....

Have probably played them all.....

Lately:
Crysis
COD4
HL2 Ep 2
Stalker
TimeShifter
BlackSite Area 51

But this game looks like some kind of RPG that I accept different "roles" in----and not even sure if this is First Person....

Anybody playing this game??? Is it a "shooter" at all???

More of an RPG???

Knowing that I really only like shooters....should this game be on my "return to Best Buy list"????

Mrs. TQ is playing it in the other room even as I write this. She loves it.
You can play it in FPV only if you choose to be a "Hunter" class character, otherwise it's TPV, but a good one...and yes, it's an RPG.

Or you could choose to expand your gaming horizons and play it as a Hunter-class character.
I got started on FPS-style games back in the early 90's and right now Crysis and Half-Life: Episode 2 languish on my computer as I've started a new Oblivion game.
Deeper game-play, longer games and an overall more satisfying experience may await you in an Action-RPG.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - as wonderful as it is - doesn't quite qualify as an Action-RPG. Close, yes, but not quite.
I'll get around to Crysis and HL2:EP2 at some point but right now I'm having way too much fun as a stealth-kill mage in Oblivion.

With the Hunter-class in Hellgate you'll be able to acquire and modify wonderful weapons while carousing a Hell-blasted London landscape.
I'd give it a shot. You might just find it changes your taste in games...or, as I said, expand it.

If they fixed some of the bigger bugs/gaps, that game would be close to perfect. They could start with the rep system and how it affects trade, but there are a few other things.
Otherwise it stands as one of the best survival shooters.

Agreed----absolutely one of my all time favorites-----can't wait for those Russian guys to do another----or a sequel....

as I've stated before S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was a great game but deeply flawed as well---side missions meant pretty much nothing and got very repetitive (kill the sales representative, purge the area of dogs etc etc), money was of no use...I forgot my other gripes with the game

I want to play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. again (especially with the new patch that added the Float32 mod) but it's not at the top of the list

There's an even newer Stalker patch out than the one that introduced Float32. We're up to 1.0005 now.
I haven't installed it yet because when I go back for my third run through I'm going to use this mod: Basix GFX-MV, Stalker Downloads, Stalker Singleplayer

It's only for the 1.0004 patch.

I'm hoping that with the prequel/sequel coming out they'll polish up the original game's rough edges and bring the franchise closer to true RPG territory. But, even if they don't it'll still be heads up better than 99% of anything else out there.

Important: don't forget to run the game's updater after you install it and before you run the game.
Hellgate was released in a beta state and for all intent and purposes is still a beta, but with the latest .07 patch (not even a 1.0 yet!) it's very playable and looks worlds better than that half-baked demo they threw together a couple of months ago.

Mrs. TQ is about three-quarters of the way through the game and she's not run into any catastrophic bugs yet.

It looks real pretty when her Summoner character (third-person view) and her posse of demons are attacking the Hordes of Hell and all sorts of spells are being flung about.

Just finished hellgate london. Really liked it as an action rpg. As TQ said, the hunter class is from a fps perspective. The problem I had is that there is still a memory leak in dx10 interfaces - this is a known bug and will be fixed in the next patch. But as a result, if I played for more than a couple of hours at a time, I would get an out of memory crash (on a 2 gig system).

Mrs. TQ hit a catastrophic bug last night. Apparently, when the portal to the final portion of the game opens if you don't go through it at that point it will close and you can't complete the game. She still had some quests she wanted to finish and went back to complete them only to return to the portal to find there was no longer a way for her to go through it.

Come to think of it, that may be less of a bug and more of a design decision, but the game is still in beta and that may change with the .08 patch.

Only two more patches to go and Hellgate will be an official 1.0 release...funny.

Correction: she found a work-around on the Hellgate website and was able to proceed. She should finish the game today or tomorrow and then start a new game with a different class character.
